We had the pleasure of dining at the newly opened An Cala Ciuin, located on the first floor of the Mishnish Hotel along the scenic waterfront of Tobermory. The dining room strikes a perfect balance between modern and casual, creating a welcoming atmosphere that complements the innovative dishes served.
Under the guidance of owner and head chef Ross Caithness, the menu showcases local produce with a creative twist. We opted for the tasting menu (an a la carte menu is available, too), which included choices of six or ten courses, featuring a range of strong and unique flavors. Ross skillfully plays with textures and flavors ranging from classic French (a beautifully prepared lobster bisque), Scottish (a silky pea velouté) to Asian (kimchi made from local wild leeks, served with homemade XO sauce). Particularly memorable were the scallops with chili, white chocolate, vermouth, and fennel — a personal favorite perfectly illustrating the restaurant's skill in blending techniques like dehydration and fermentation with traditional Scottish products.
The wine pairing was thoughtful, enhancing the dining experience, though beer and other beverages were also available and appeared to be equally well-selected. The service was impeccable, Ross was both attentive and friendly, contributing to the relaxed yet refined ambiance.
An Cala Ciuin is a perfect example of modern fine dining in a casual setting, offering a Michelin-star level experience right in the heart of Tobermory. For anyone visiting the Isle of Mull, this restaurant is a must-visit for an unforgettable...
Read moreAbsolutely outstanding. We hadn’t visited before but took a chance by booking our wedding dinner here. It went way beyond our expectations. Ross is, frankly, a genius - the food is world class, and real value for money. Every detail on the plate is perfect, and his sauces are to die for. Do the tasting menu, and get the wines - Jamie is a brilliant maître d' and you’ll have a great time being talked through each dish and drink in an unpretentious, knowledgeable manner. We had been to Andrew Fairlie earlier in the week and with no disrespect to that establishment, I would choose this place every time. The best of Scottish produce paired with top tier culinary skill and talent. What a brilliant thing for Mull to have these guys doing what they’re doing....
Read moreWe had a meal at An Cala Ciuin a month ago and were simply blown away. The team working here are absolutely first rate. The tasting menu was varied and extensive with outstanding ingredients.
We enjoyed speaking with Jamie who was running the front of house. It was a highly relaxed, knowledgeable, enjoyable experience paired with food of the absolute highest quality coming from the kitchen. I’ve eaten at many Michelin starred restaurants over the years and I genuinely can’t think of any that I enjoyed more than my meal here.
