My friend and I visit the Avant Garde on many occasions and have always been very happy with the service but we were sooo disappointed in the Hogmanay evening (2course meal plus Ceilidh £25.00 7 pm - 1am). We had a great table by the dance floor and certainly cannot complain about the staff who are always extremely friendly and helpful. However, the meal was dreadful. The soup was OK with the smallest piece of brown roll I have ever had. The individual steak pie was nice but the three very small roast potatoes and spoonful of broccoli left alot to be desired. There had been some herb added to the broccoli which certainly did not add a nice flavour and it was also overcooked. Portions very small. I was also very disappointed that there was no background music from 7-9 pm which gave the bar no atmosphere whatsoever. Then, the biggest disappointment of the evening......a one man band for the Ceilidh! I am not complaining about the accordion player who is a good musician but come on I expected alot more for my £25.00. We were very bored as alot of time was wasted teaching everyone the steps of the dances! We left around 10 pm and brought in the bells in a pub within 5 mins walk which had FREE entry and a 5 piece live band plus a Piper playing a few tunes after the bells so that saved the day for us. I think you will have to rethink things for next year Avant Garde! I would like to wish all your excellent bar staff and yourself Billy a very Happy and prosperous New Year. I'm sorry it's such a bad review but feel you should know these things so there can be improvements made for next Hogmanay. I will still be visiting the Avant Garde as I am sure this has been a one off...

Incredibly expensive over £10 for a half &half lager shandy and a small vodka and tin of iron bru ,he better rethink his prices if he want to bring back the crowd who frequented his place every Saturday and may I say spent a fortune !!! I realise that this last year has been hard for everyone but to make old and new people pay for that is WRONG !!!!!!! Thought we'd give the place we've used as our haunt for the last few years another try although pricess have risen considerably,so went in five of us last Saturday ,after a bit of banter with waitress the "owner" came over during our conversation he asked if I had put that review up to which I said yes .he said I should have spoken to him , unfortunately the request for a review only came on my phone after we left ! His attitude completely changed after I said yes and he proceeded to go behind me slapping both his hands quite hard on my shoulders while saying don't worry about it I replied I won't,he then came round to face my face with his and whilst invading my personal space said put in another review so here it is.him slapping me didn't intimidate me at all I can look after myself ,however I thought the best way to retort was to treat it with the contempt it deserved ( churlish)this venue and barstaff have always been the highlight of our Saturdays however we won't be back unless it changes hands ,as for social distancing well,it was definitely not in place on this occasion with regards to his attitude and manhandling of me and shouting...

Great night spoiled by over zealous cops, storming in, removing even soft drinks from people, telling them they are not allowed to dance, this is not law!!, they charged in, intimidating people, this was a scheduled ticketed event , everyone seated for New Years meal, singer, they kept coming in numbers, telling people to get out, again there was no laws broken, searching toilets, a guy was bundled to the ground, they acted like a SWAT invasion, the occasion was quite, peaceful attended by a couple of”meetup groups”, lots of folk in kilts, lovely dinner, excellent well mannered staff, the police were also in and out the toilets, more arrived, demanding everyone leave, the , if you arrive with someone. You dance with them and no laws were broken, piper not allowed to play, music of, they walked about as if it was a gangster scene out of a movie, I am a regular at this place, and it is always excellent, hope the management can take this further and others, and involved organisations have something to say, police continued to arrive, bullying tactics, when I left, still more arrived, people filmed the scene on their phones and badge numbers were taken, fully supportive of management, all middle aged couples and women seated having a meal, then this disgraceful behaviour of the “force”, very well named. Will be back to this establishment, there was no trouble, nothing, then man was on the floor with police...

Despite Covid 19 impacting on their business viability the two staff on duty were cheery, warm, welcoming and upbeat. It was lunchtime and this venue that would normally be busy had three other customers sat together at their table. I had the potato soup and the mushroom risotto. The soup came with crusty sourdough bread and butter. The risotto was rich and delicious and I can't recommend it strongly enough. The Coca-Cola came in a closed can with a glass of ice. This venue is well known for it's live music particularly folk and ceilidhs. Great for tourists and visitors to get a taste of Scotland including Scottish country dancing. It is a little sad to know that for the foreseeable future there will be no Live music and the dance floor will have no Strip The Willow or Gay Gordons. Hopefully they will survive the pandemic as it is a great venue and is one of the only places in the Glasgow city centre / Merchant City where you can experience a Ceilidh. There is a full size statue of Robert Burns sitting on a throne that is either a new addition or I just hadn't noticed before.

Took my best friend here for her birthday..never been before. Loved every minute. Wish I took the woman's name who served us, she was amazing! So friendly and attentive. Went above and beyond and was clearly very busy, but nothing was too much trouble for her. Dinner and live entertainment was fab. Meal was good quality freshly cooked food, tasted amazing and was an absolute bargain for Glasgow city prices ( we pay more at home - Falkirk, for what we had here... And lesser quality). Cannot fault anything here. Loved every second.... Best homemade apple crumble I've ever tasted yum yum. Best experience ever. Defo be back. Raved about it to everyone xxx
