I've been really looking forward to going to Mowgli, every time I have had the chance before it had been full. A great sign. I love the books and the recipes are terrific (each one a hit and reproduceable), there's some really good stuff in the 3 volumes and I was looking forward to seeing what was on the menu at the time of the visit.
I'll give the staff 10/10: friendly, knowledgeable, efficient - exactly what you'd hope for.
Decor and "crockery" (hint, there's no actual plates!) is delightful. Real attention to detail. Again 10/10
The high ceiling and 3? floors of tables can make it noisy but that just adds to the atmosphere. The swinging seats on the tables for two are fun.
We tried two cocktails between us, an old fashioned and a Margherita, both had terrifically imaginative Indian flavour twists and I recommend the cocktail menu wholeheartedly.
Now on to the food, sadly not a high score. Now to be fair I should say we dined on a Thursday at 6pm. We had treacle tamarind fries, temple dhal and an office workers tiffin between two. Price was fair for the amount we got but I was disappointed overall.
Our tiffin had a rice (nicely cooked), railway / house chicken curry (watery and bland then afterkick of just heat without flavour), house lamb curry (flat but acceptable), chickpeas (bland, disappointing).
The treacle fries were rich and sticky, no real Indian steetfood flavours but enjoyable as a dish. I used them to deliver the dhal and chickpeas to my mouth, to give them a taste.
The chickpeas are listed as " simmered in rich Darjeeling spiced with tomato and spinach sauce". They tasted of plain chickpeas. If I couldn't take the tamarind fries I'd have assumed I had COVID.
We are GF so maybe the much fuller menu would have scored higher for flavour - but why should it?
I'm hugely disappointed, the cook books are great, the place is always busy.... This is Glasgow, the Indian capital of Europe. I'll give them a second chance, but only after I have tried everything else...
Read moreIt was our first time to Mowgli. We went with some friends as a group of five.
We all had the same impression. While the atmosphere was very inviting and the food descriptions sounded amazing, what was ultimately served up tasted incredibly one-dimensional and predominantly sweet. The dishes had zero depth of flavour, which is quite a feat for Central Asian street food that you would expect to be buzzing with flavour. The after-taste was always sickly sweet. This was even true for the cocktails. I ordered a "Smoked Cardamom Old Fashioned" that was supposed to taste of smoked cardamom and curry leaves. Tasted zero of neither. Even the Whisky got lost because the very sweet Apricot-liqueur dominated everything. A sweet Old Fashioned – a first (and hopefully last) for me.
Another issue were the starters. They were all quite dry and seemed pre-made (or having spent too much time on the pass).
Considering who the restaurateur of Mowgli is, I can only rationalise the food experience we had with severe quality standard issues at the local level. Always a potential issue with chain restaurants like Mowgli. A shame really, because the menu did sound good. We could have had a winner if the local chefs knew how to actually prepare these dishes.
Sorry – it never feels good to write a harsh review, but this was just utterly...
Read moreWe arrived at 6.10 pm for dinner , we are visiting Glasgow and opted for indian cuisine. We came across Mowgli and opted to try. At arrival we waited few minutes before escorted to our table. Once seated we got tge menu, it took 15 minutes before anyone came to take our order. Other tables got water , we weren't given water on our table. The waiters took long before attended to us that felt un warm. Finally our order was taken.
The food.... We ordered a chicken curry wasn't the best not hot served in a small tiny tiffin tin , 3/10 Fried kerman chicken 4/10 Basmati rice 🍚 can be done better and served hot .5/10 Tadka daal was nice and simple . The spice level is very low and can be done better to serve with some condiments like some carrots or cucumbers or pickle of some sort . Overall it was an okay for dinner but not the best. The drinks were good the mango tonic and sherbet was ok The watermelon chaat Was okay the tamarind tasted good the watermelon tasted off and the crushed pastry would be better if used crispy. We waited another 15 minutes to pay thr bill. Our serving lady brought the bill and walked away and we waited again 20 minutes before she was back , attended another table and then back to us and finally we paid and left . Food taste and spices can do better . Serving the meal hot would add...
