A former townhouse built in 1778, the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow is both an interesting and inspiring venue which is fit for its current purpose as an art gallery. Outside, the grand stone columns are a reminder of the history of the building whilst inside it has a modern interior with features such as glass stairs which prove that an old building can be updated for modern day use and still keep its historical integrity intact. The atmosphere is more lively than a regular art gallery, possibly because the audience is younger and the art which is on display is meant to inspire creativity and challenge traditional views of "art". Modern art isn't about perfectly painted portraits like those in traditional galleries but more about idea and concept of art and this is reflected in the atmosphere. Although not everyone's cup of tea, the Gallery of Modern Art is appealing to the general public as it is something different and interesting. As it is a public arts venue entry is free which means it is appealing to many target audiences which is good for business as it attracts otherwise unlikely customers: it is a good free day out for people short of money or with a large family who would otherwise be unable to afford it, people who would not normally go to an art gallery might take the opportunity as it is free entry and so if they don't like it they won't have wasted money and for those who visit often they are not spending extortionate amounts of money to view the art on offer. To attract new audiences the Gallery of Modern Art is continually evolving and updating its facilities: the interactive space in the basement has now become the Learning Library and the rooftop café has been transformed into an Education and Access studio which holds artist talks and workshops. The Gallery of Modern Art is easily accessible as it is situated in Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow, which has many transport routes. It is accessible to everyone as it is open 6 days a week and has wheelchair access. Facilities include: free guided tours, gallery shop; café; male and female toilets; wheelchair access; nearby pay and display parking as well as being only a short walking distance from various subway and train stations. Although not to everyone's taste, in my opinion, the Gallery of Modern Art is good for a free day out and a good way to display art and inspire people. The building is visually pleasing although inside there are many blank wall spaces and I feel that more could be done to maximize the amount of art on display in such a big space. The gift shop was small and somewhat expensive but overall my visit was an enjoyable experience and I would recommend the Gallery of Modern Art to creative people who want to broaden their knowledge and...
Read moreWhy this gallery has only mediocre rating, is incomprehensible to me. When we visited the gallery there were many interesting and controversial exhibits and the staff was very polite and friendly. There is even a children's corner! My guess why the gallery is rated only mediocre is that this is probably due to the nature of modern art. Unfortunately, this is often misunderstood or misjudged (its not about taste). Just because one is too uncultivated or too conservative to understand modern art does not justify a negative rating! People, if the exhibition confuses, disgusts, shocks or provokes you, then that is precisely the goal of the artist! Some people appreciate something, the rest can look at old pictures on a wall. and: If you think that art is there to hang in the living room, you should avoid such great galleries and perhaps read a book or two about art before you wrote an comment. Thank you!
Read moreIt's the building behind the Statue of the pompous Duke of Wellington on Horseback who is now sniggered at by visitors and passers-by. Yes it's the iconic 'Chookie Wellington', with the traffic cone hat!
Like all of Glasgow's museums and art galleries, the.GoMA is free. Visitors might need to use elbows, to get past the Wegies (locals) who regularly pop in for a bit of culture whilst 'in the toon daein their messages' (shopping in the city centre).
The Edinburgh museums, good as they are, tend to be aloof, passed by and over looked by the residents of Edinburgh (Edinburgers?...who knows?), whilst Glasgow's museums are heaving with diverse life and art; what ever that may be. Anything really, 'this and that' perhaps. The day of my visit, there was far more of 'this' (excellent works of modern art, stunningly creative, so I am told) and very little of 'that' (which tbh looked like a collection of junk assembled by a monkey). Actually I liked the junk far better, and I think I got what the money was all about. Just as all the smiling sniggering passers-by get what the NED who first put the traffic cone on the Duke's was all about. Who would have believed that the NED's actions would become a world know piece of modern art enjoyed by millions. That's exactly what the GoMA is all about... It's all Art... 'Modern Art' in fact, and that means a lot of people might think that a lot of it is just junk, but hey, if just around the corner, or outside the front door, you're likely to see something that you just 'get' because it 'gets you.
Have a visit, you've nothing to lose, it's free admission, you'll be in, out of the rain, and there's a 'stoatin' (absolutely marvelous) 'wee' (small) shop 'stappit fu and stowed oot' (well stocked) with 'rerr sutff' (highly desirable items). I think you'll surprise yourself and be glad that you popped in.
It worth while keeping an eye on this place... 'Just in case'. Well 'you...
