Dined here this evening with my wife. Didn't know what to expect (we'd found our usual go to Chinese Restaurant closed until early January, which was disappointing on a cold, damp & windy evening). Not to be put off we headed off to the Cathay Garden, which we'd seen open earlier on. In we went... Whilst the restaurant was quiet (but busy on Take away order's), it was warm and welcoming. The staff immediately friendly and helpful from the off. We chose the 'Peking Banquet' and thoroughly enjoyed it. Couldn't have been better. I even enjoyed a free cup of coffee on the house, which I thought was a really nice gesture at the end of our meal to finish off. Also a no rush service from start to finish (at our request) which we appreciated very much. Hate rushing when eating....Like a little rest between courses. After all, it's not a race. The price too was more than reasonable and the excellent service from a young man and perhaps the owners wife, was really first class. They, the lovely food, the pricing and the overall enjoyable evening, will see us look forward to returning. Indeed it's our new go to, when opting for a Chinese Restaurant in Southport in future. Some correspondents have criticised the decor. Personally we found it clean, warm & comfortable; and we both never had any negative thoughts about it (indeed we've been to far worse by a country mile). We shall be returning. That is certain. Thank you very much for a lovely reasonably priced meal and an overall enjoyable evening; and well done! What more can you want - speak...
Read moreThis was our first visit to Cathay Garden. It has a very relaxed and casual atmosphere and the staff are very friendly and attentive. Our starters were delicious - spring rolls and salt & pepper barbeque ribs. My sliced duck with prawn stuffing main was also mouth watering, but my partner found her beef with green pepper and black bean sauce - one of her favourite dishes - too salty. The restaurant was very understanding, and brought the same dish again, with less added salt. However, we discovered that the saltiness was coming from the black beans, and there were lots of them. The staff tried very hard to help us, but it did spoil the evening a little. We were also asked to leave while still drinking the last of our wine, as the table was needed. We'd been there almost two hours at this point. Researching black beans since the meal, I've discovered they can be very salty if not rinsed before cooking, so I wonder if this was the issue? Although not the best experience, we will try this restaurant again. EDIT: I do not recommend the takeaway! You can get the same or better quality elsewhere for...
Read moreWe have not been to Cathy Garden for some time, the staff have changed and seem indifferent. The draught beer had a wierd taste to it so i just left it.The crab and sweetcorn soup is chicken and sweetcorn soup with cut crabsticks added. They forgot to serve the spring rolls with the auderves, after clearing the table they brought out two spring rolls, no sauce and no plates to eat off. We did not get the finger bowl with warm water and lemon as other customers did. The cucumber, chopped spring onion, hoy sin sauce came out with 6 home made pancakes. Then the bones with what was a poor excuse for duck arrived, we managed to make two very small rolls each ( any smaller and they could have passed for cigarettes). To our amazement no one thought we might need plates to eat off, so we asked and got plates. When the mains came incredibly they brought plates first but then asked if we needed cutlery ? Over all this was a very disappointing meal and some where I would not return to...
