Authentic Indian Cuisine at 400° in Sheffield: A Culinary Delight
During a recent work trip to Sheffield, my colleagues and I had a strong craving for Indian tea after a long day. Thanks to the recommendation of a friendly local, we discovered 400°, a delightful restaurant that not only satisfied our tea cravings but also introduced us to an array of mouthwatering Indian dishes. The experience left us impressed with the hospitality, speed of service, and the flavorsome offerings. Here's a detailed review of our visit to 400°, a place that deserves recognition for its authentic Indian cuisine.
Ambiance and Hospitality: Upon entering 400°, we were warmly welcomed by the staff, including a server who, like us, hailed from India. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting ambiance, creating a comfortable atmosphere for our dining experience. It was fascinating to learn that many Indian students work part-time here, adding to the authenticity of the place. The servers were attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu, making us feel right at home.
Culinary Exploration: Our server graciously recommended some must-try dishes, allowing us to delve into a delightful gastronomic journey. We started with papadum, crispy Indian snacks, accompanied by three delicious dips. These tantalizing appetizers set the stage for what was to come. We followed our server's suggestion and ordered samosa chaat, chicken tikka, fish fingers, and laal maans.
Delicious Flavors and Quality: As the food arrived at our table, we were captivated by the aroma and presentation. The dishes looked enticing and lived up to our expectations. The chicken tikka and fish fingers were exceptional, with well-balanced flavors and tender textures. While the laal maans didn't surpass the taste of the original we had experienced in Rajasthan, it was still a flavorful rendition. The dishes showcased the chef's skill and commitment to preserving the authenticity of Indian cuisine.
Service and Efficiency: One aspect that stood out at 400° was their impressive speed of service. Despite our large group of 17 people, the staff managed to serve us promptly without compromising on the quality of the food. The servers were attentive, ensuring that we had an enjoyable dining experience from start to finish. The efficiency of the team was commendable and contributed to our overall satisfaction.
Value for Money: Considering the quality of the food, the warm hospitality, and the overall experience, the prices at 400° were reasonable. For our smaller group, the bill came to around £95, which we found quite fair. Even when we returned with a larger team of 17 people, our total bill of approximately £850 still felt justified given the fantastic service and delectable cuisine we enjoyed.
Ownership and Accolades: An interesting aspect we discovered about 400° is that it is owned by a Punjabi, adding a personal touch to the restaurant's identity. Additionally, the talented chef, Sidharth Singh, hails from Rajasthan, India, and was recently honored with the prestigious Bharat Gaurav award. This recognition speaks volumes about the chef's expertise and further reinforces the authenticity and excellence of the cuisine served at 400°.
Conclusion: Our visit to 400° in Sheffield left us delighted with the rich flavors and warm hospitality. The restaurant's dedication to offering authentic Indian cuisine, combined with the efficient service and inviting ambiance, made for a truly memorable experience. While the taste may not surpass that of India's finest establishments, 400° stands out as a remarkable option for those seeking a taste of Indian gastronomy in the UK. We highly recommend visiting this restaurant to satisfy your cravings for Indian food when in...
Read moreWe came here for a birthday meal and in all honesty, we wish we didn’t. We had a table reservation and the waitress seemed surprised at this, we was then seated on a table for someone called Josh, I don’t know who Josh is but I hope he had a better experience than us. The restaurant was quiet and simple which we of course didn’t mind but it did have an awkward atmosphere at times and made us feel slightly judged, we also wondered what the situation was when the door was locked while we was inside. The food arrived and the curry did taste very nice to begin with. Although, I wish I didn’t order it when we were all ill for the next few days with sickness and stomach pains. We received the bill with a service charge that was not stated anywhere on the menu, thankfully this was able to be taken off as we didn’t believe the waitress was attentive enough for us to pay this service charge and we saw no other staff. Drinks were forgotten when being brought to the table but they definitely wasn’t forgotten when being added to the bill considering we was charged for an extra drink we never had and 2 bottles of water that had already been put on the table before we even got there. Neither of those who attended the meal in our party of 4 will ever return to this restaurant. We all feel like we paid for a very poor and awkward experience, for us all to be ill. It’s a shame that a restaurant can let its customers down like this when they have such a great opportunity to create a nice and friendly environment, I hope they improve for their own sakes, not only their environment but their food safety too as it is very clear something was not right with the food we...
Read moreVisited 400 D.C. tonight for dinner with my family. My wife had to leave early with our youngest as she was having a tantrum, so I stayed back with our other two children to finish the meal. The experience that followed was frustrating and quite unusual.
While the restaurant did get fairly busy, there was only one waitress managing the entire floor. I understand that can be stressful — but what stood out was how she kept bringing us the bill without being asked, even though we hadn’t finished ordering. The first time, I asked politely for the dessert menu instead. But before we could order anything else, she returned again with the bill — and insisted I pay it there and then, saying she had other guests waiting. At that point, I felt I had no choice but to pay and wrap up.
To add to the oddness, the bill was handwritten (albeit itemised) and no VAT receipt was provided — which isn’t acceptable for a £115 bill at a city centre restaurant.
As we were leaving, I gave her honest feedback. I told her I appreciated she was doing her best alone, but I’ve never in my life been forced to pay the bill before I was finished at a restaurant. We had intended to order more food and desserts — and were essentially rushed out.
The food was decent and the setting has potential, but the service was underwhelming and felt unprofessional. A restaurant charging over £100 for a family meal needs more than one staff member on duty — and guests should never be made to feel unwelcome just because part of their group leaves early. Disappointing experience overall, and unfortunately, I won’t...
