The food was amazing I had a fillet steak cooked to perfection, the most amazing chips my wife had a sausage dish and she had never tasted pasta like it before but I cannot give you any more than 3 stars.
And that unfortunately is because of the service. We wanted a special night for a combined 1st anniversary and 50th birthday and it wasn't made to feel special and in a restaurant that has some pretty good reviews so I was expecting a brilliant overall experience.
Firstly - The Food Amazing!! Tasty, well cooked and well presented, we really cannot fault it
Location and Venue Located close to the theatres and many shopping treats, it's a lovely place in a pretty much perfect location. However I was near the air conditioning unit, so as the night went on I got pretty cold and uncomfortable, but then the air conditioning won't work correctly if the front door is fully open, ehich it was.
The restaurant is pretty cosy but not overly as others have suggested.
Service This is where the restaurant really let us down and I would only really rate as 1 star!!
As we walked in there was no real concierge/ reception, someone sort of behind the door mumbled something but then someone behind the dessert counter looked over and smiled so we said our name and booking time, and then someone else appeared and sort of shuffled us down to a table.
We were seated, we perused the menu and then picked up the drinks menu, which is quite extensive, I had not got to the 2nd page before we were asked if we would like something from the menu, I politely declined as I was still looking.
I looked back to the food menu, we made our decisions and within 10 minutes our order was being taken, we were quite rudely told when trying to order Olives that these were no longer available. I will come back to these though. On ordering my steak, while taking the order the waiter kept looking else where, but as I stated how I would like my steak he just said with chips and shot off!! I would have actually preferred the rocket with balsamic reduction.
A little later, i think we were eating our starters we went for the bread and the scallops, both amazing another couple arrived, obviously some regular customers. They were seated in front of us and within minutes they had olives on their table, hang on we had just been told olives were no longer available!!
Not impressed!!
That was just the beginning of bad experience, with plates being cleared away from the table while we still had food in hand, when we placed money on the table to pay it was literally snatched away and done was exclaimed busy the waiter. There was a young boy just meandering around bored as bored can be, playing drums outside on the empty tables. When asked for a dessert menu a different waiter rambled off 3 dessert choices and I thought I heard lemon in the 2nd option I was right and again the food was delicious along with the coffee I had as well. But I had to catch a waiter to ask for coffee.
It really was like they didn't want us to be there and we were too much trouble so while writing I've actually got that annoyed again I've reduced my review...
Read moreThe best restaurant in Sheffield by far. I've only eaten there 5 or 6 times- only because it's really hard for me to get out. If I could drive, or lived closer, I'd go at least twice a month. Truly the best food I've had in the 7 years I've been in the UK.
The service is outstanding, the food is delicious - even better than most of the Italian-American food I grew up on. My mama's Parmigiana is still the best, but she never made an orange sauce as good as the one Vero Gusto use on the scampi ravioli, my favourite menu item.
They have a lovely bartender, who will make up a most delicious drink for you. Every menu item I've ordered is excellent, from the bread & antipasti to the desserts (there was too much breading on my zucchini flowers once, that's the only 'bad' thing I can say). Can't comment on the wine as I don't drink it but they do have a great looking selection.
Once I was lucky enough to get a freshly baked sfogliatella, it was the most delicious pastry I've ever had. Really, it was. Sadly I haven't seen it there again, but the cannoli is excellent. It's the real deal, not overly-sweet like the faux-cannoli I've had in the UK. I just wish they had Spumoni gelato & Cassata cake, that's my only complaint. But we can't have it all, esp. when living in a foreign country.
If you live in sheffield you must go. If you're visiting sheffield, you really should adjust your itinerary to allow at least 1 meal here, if not all of them. If you live elsewhere, put it on your list of places you must eat before you die.
Accessibility: Despite being a tiny restaurant, they are more than accommodating and accessible for those in both manual and power wheelchairs. Moreso than any other restaurant I've ever been to in England. Just tell them you have a chair when you make your reservation so that the easiest table can be...
Read moreI have now dined here 3 times. For me VeroGusto is a solid 4+ stars. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere, very much a family run feel. Some of the staff are Italian. The decor is bright, but the dining area feels quite intimate. There is a lovely 'wine wall' at the end of the restaurant. I understand their selection of wines is very good. You can even buy online.
Now, the food. The style is not in any way like a chain Italian. It's focused more on presentation, quality ingredients.and cooking. Think more Masterchef. I started with the Burrata & Pomodoro followed by Acquerello (with sea bass and king prawn). Finishing with a Tiramisu. My starter was a new dish to me, the overall flavours very nice, the heritage tomatoes being a fresh flavour. I felt a contrasting element (bread) would help as the dish is quite soft textures. The Risotto with sea bass, delicious. The sea bass portion could have been bigger, it was about three inches square, but the flavours across the risotto really good. Tiramisu, if you like it, you will like this.
Overall, some may find the portion size to price a little high, but that's why I gave four stars, for those that like a fuller plate. However if you are looking for a more sophisticated dining experience you will love it.
The staff were great, willing to chat and have a joke. Attentative but not overly. Plenty of vegetarian options and being on the ground floor would appear to be wheelchair friendly (I would check this first though).
Definitely in my top 5 Sheffield restaurants and a return visit likely to...
