OK to good food at tourist trap prices. It was about the fourth or fifth time we had been here for a special occassion. We booked ahead and even paid a deposit. We turned up on time and had to wait half an hour for our table. We tried a couple of £10.99 cocktails (more expensive than Newcastle bars) and were distinctly underwhelmed when we tried them and found them overly bitter. I think all the beers are small bottles - at least the ones we ordered and expensive for what they were. A few of us ordered starters and then waited 30 to 40 minutes before they appeared. We then had to ask where the mains were after another 30 minutes ticked by but they eventually arrived. The food is nice to good but I just had fish and chips and you have to pay extra for peas. Also, be warned that the portions are small. A 'large' fish and chips will arrive as what can only be described as 'standard medium sized fish. Perhaps our table was simply unlucky as we watched other large and small parties arriving after us, being served both their courses and leaving in the time we waited for our mains. I do remember this same long wait the last. time I was here in only a party of four. As far as the staff go, they are friendly and helpful when asked. Good points are that it's a nice clean restaurant with a great view of South Shields beachfront if you get the right seat, the food is nice when it eventually gets to you and the staff are pleasant and helpful. Negatives are that the wait times for your food are very long, the portions are on the small side (don't expect a small bun if you order a stottie bun - usually a stottie is a large round flat bread about the size of a tea plate or larger. Here it's just a burger bar bun size). Prices are high for what you get, beer seems limited and the cocktails were unimpressive and expensive. This is about the third time out of four or five, I've been disappointed, so I won't be back. They have a restaurant a short walk away on Ocean Road which serves similar food at more reasonable prices and the quality is just as good or better. Never had me waiting and glancing at my watch there either. Can't recommend the Seafood Temple. I want to like it but its overpriced, overrated and...
Read moreWe visited Colmans take away at Temple just thirty minutes ago and were very disappointed by both the quality of the food and service.
When entering my granddaughter slipped on an empty slush cup that must have blown in from litter outside but had not been swept out, the young girl behind the counter did not ask if she were okay and seemed very annoyed with her tripping up by glaring at her silently. The service that was received during our order being placed was very poor as the girl seemed irritated still and continued to give glares which was very strange behaviour.
The food itself is overhyped. We asked for plenty of salt and vinegar yet the chips were extremely bland and tasteless. The tub of gravy was watery in both texture and taste, as soon as the lid was taken off we knew that it would be a watery mess. The chips had a nice colour to them but were quite dry and went cold on the short walk to our car. The sausage was enjoyable and the curry sauce was enjoyed by my daughter, however, they were altogether nothing special compared to what we were led to expect and the curry sauce was a sparse table spoon over mainly the sausage and a couple of chips despite paying the extra £1.50+ for the sauce.
This experience felt like a waste of money as most went in the bin, the price was just over £20 for four which is the norm now however we will stick to our usual beach chip shop in future as we know we are not missing out. Of course it is a fish restaurant so most of the food will include fish, however, a majority of fish and chips restaurants still offer chicken nuggets for children and we were disappointed to see that they did not for fussy little ones.
Overall, Colmans is nothing special despite what it claims about itself. The staff appear uncaring, there needs to be hazard signs on premise and the food is a let down. Chips are chips but you know when you’ve had really good chips which sadly...
Read moreColmans Seafood Temple is a well-known and beautifully located restaurant in Newcastle, offering stunning seafront views and a menu rich in fresh fish, oysters, prawns, and mussels. One of the standout features is the panoramic layout, windows surround the space so even those seated centrally can enjoy the coastal scenery, which adds a lovely touch to the dining experience.
The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the staff were generally friendly. We ordered the fried cod and grilled haddock, both of which were cooked to perfection and full of flavour.
While the overall experience was enjoyable, there were a couple of areas that could be improved. The restaurant was quite busy during our visit, and understandably, the pace of service reflected that. However, in the rush, a few moments of carelessness occurred, such as oyster juice being spilled on the table during dish clearing. Additionally, although the venue states that restrooms are checked hourly, the condition of the male toilets during our visit suggested otherwise.
Colmans clearly has a lot going for it, and the team works hard to deliver a memorable experience. With a bit more attention to detail during peak times, it could truly live up to...
