I don't know why but Mexican/Texican restaurants in this city tend to just randomly decide to start getting worse after a while. Like TacosMX in Portswood Mexigo got off to a great start, even seemed to be doing so well it opened another store, was a great franchising chance and now a quick browse on companies house shows its dying a slow death.
I've been semi regular for 3 or so years with decreasing frequency in the past year, used to like going once a week but now just can't justify the 15 quid for a takeaway meal. In Above Barbers and AK barbers up the road the premium 30 quid fade is justified by service, free coke or alcohol etc. On the other side at Nest Coffee the higher prices (at least on food) is justified by good atmosphere/upmarket seating. I compare Mexigo to Roosters Piri Piri across street and have no idea why I'm paying a fiver extra for the same amount of food/calories.
The staff are friendly but it's very obvious in the past year policies have changed where Mexigo is pushing hard to keep costs down, nearly always at the expense of the customer.
In the past: You'd always get both cream and salsa/chili dips without asking All drinks were on the meal menu except alcohol/shakes, now "just the bottom row in the fridge" Ice creams were a nice takeaway add-on; now they're on some haute couture gourmet pricing level. Policy towards student ID was basically at-request discount, now even the girl who recognises me/my regular order said she can't give me the discount when I forgot my ID 'because there's cctv' ... that £1 extra isn't worth the £50 I'll pick to spend elsewhere from the inconvenience.
You could have half a foot in the grave with a walking stick and Above Barbers still wouldn't ask you to identify yourself with uni ID.
About two months ago I asked for both dips and the lady said sorry they cost extra. The supervisor intervened (younger blonde guy) and gave me both. On the last three orders (one eat-in, two takeaways) I didn't get any dips at all. When I asked on my first takeaway I was refused. I also had no napkins.
On my most recent takeaway order today I had neither dips - didn't have time to notice as forgot the wrapped tub was my melted cheese - or napkins.
This is seriously the only restaurant I've ever been to anywhere in the world where napkins don't come as standard. I had a takeaway kebab in rural Bulgaria where the dude gave me napkins by the fist enough for a week. A petrol station in Poland gave me a tissue pack worth of napkins with a hot dog last month. Like hello???
If it is standard in McDonald's and Burger King it should damn well be a standard for double the price. Perhaps just put some napkins on your drink ledge on the left side near the door and restock them?
Falling afoul of not noticing you're pricing yourselves at a premium but trying to save costs on your customers like an ice cream truck. Prices are basically similar to Five Guys but the service freebies are nowhere near the same. They'd give you a bath of vinegar if you asked. Higher prices are fine when the treatment matches, then I return. At Mexigo it no longer does. I feel like an inconvenience after the food is packed and in my hand/on my table.
Longest review I've ever written but hoping it changes something because the food is good and wouldn't want...
Read moreA Delightful Mexican Lunch Experience
While browsing the menu, I quickly realized this place has a unique concept—you choose your ingredients directly from the counter and either mix them in a bowl or wrap them in a delicious bread. I opted for a wrap filled with tomato rice, black beans, fajita chicken, lettuce, and mild hot sauce. The combination was incredible! I had a large wrap, which was perfect and filling for a satisfying lunch.
We were three in total. My friends ordered a vegetarian wrap and a bowl meal, and we were all very pleased with the food. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. The experience was so inspiring that I decided to go for another Mexican meal for dinner!
If you’re looking for a casual, flavorful, and customizable meal, I highly recommend giving this place a try. Perfect for lunch, and it’ll leave you...
Read moreDidn't know what to expect. Our reservation at another place was cancelled at the last minute so we found ourselves outside Mexigo. We walked in and it was a little intimidating that everyone appeared to know what they were doing (and we didn't). However, the lovely lady that was in charge recognised this and helped us out, explaining that it works a bit like a Mexican Subway. That's where the similarity ended though, the veggie and vegan choices were extensive and the dietary knowledge of the staff was good too. Again on-the-ball, the lady worked out that I was vegetarian and my wife vegan without having to ask. We had plenty to eat and enjoyed every mouthful (especially washed down with a bottle of...
