I was given a voucher for Christmas and chose the White Hart as one of four possible "Boutique Accommodation" venues in the Peak District area. Upon arrival at 4pm, as we had been advised, we found the tea rooms shut, but gained access to the accommodation area with the pre supplied key code. ||We were in room 8 on the top floor. It overlooks the main road, but not really surprising as it is in the town centre. Traffic noise in the morning is quite full on, so bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. ||What was surprising was having to step over a pile of dirty towels before we could even access our room. Not a great start! Once in, the room is comfortable and clean, but when we looked for sockets to plug things in, there is only two........ and one of them has the wall mounted TV plugged into it! So coffee and tea facilities are provided , but you'll need a gang socket if you don't want to juggle laptops, phones and camera chargers just to make a drink. ||It would have been useful to have a larger worktop area too........ laptops, phones and kettles don't mix so well. ||Five minutes after our arrival, the fire alarm sounded. As we knew the owners had left, it seemed a reasonable assumption to make that there was actually a fire. We left the building and stood out in the street waiting for someone to appear and take charge. They didn't. There was a notice on the outer door with a contact number on it. I rang it and it went to answer phone which gave an alternate number. I rang that and it went to answer phone, helpfully informing us that no one was available .......... even though potentially the tea rooms were burning down!!! ||After about ten minutes, two young ladies ran from Costa Coffee along the street and it transpired they worked at the tea rooms. We were advised it was probably a shower that had triggered the alarm, but that aside, what sort of accommodation has a fire safety system in place that requires pure luck for someone to be aware of it? ||In the morning, we were given a nice breakfast, although the full choice suggested on their website wasn't there....... it was basically cereal and cooked breakfast options. No fruit and no yoghurt :( The coffee was good and the staff were attentive and friendly. We left for a day out and returned at tea time. The room was serviced, but they'd left our dirty cups in the bathroom sink......... no big deal at that point. Next day however, we returned from our day out to discover the room hadn't even been visited, let alone serviced. The bins were not emptied, the bed was unmade and the dirty towels were still in the shower. We couldn't complain because everyone had gone home. ||Next morning, my wife asked to speak to the manager and she was genuinely apologetic and gave us a discount on the room bill as a gesture. ||Anyway, Leek itself is a very pleasant town with lots of historic buildings , individual shops and a good selection of pubs. I would thoroughly recommend a visit to Leek and even a visit to the tea rooms. Just choose somewhere else to stay if you want boutique and romantic! ||This is a venue that would suit distance workers needing affordable accommodation without any frills. ||Lastly, DO NOT purchase a voucher from activity superstore or any other gift experience company for any accommodation break. They are always cheaper when booked direct and the venue will receive all the money, not just some of it. It is shocking to see the mark up my wife paid for our "romantic overnight getaway" compared to what I paid to extend the stay for an additional two nights. ||In summary, very nice staff and tea rooms, but IMHO, the management need to rethink the accommodation side of...

Read moreSadly no one attended to us at the front of the queue for almost ten minutes. When we were seated the seating was uncomfortable bare wood with a wonky table. We were stared at constantly during our visit by the person to the one side of our narrowly ill fitting table, and on the other side a hyperactive child swarking and leaning over our table. The decor was densely packed and over crammed with memorabilia from every ear since 1800, not just the 1800s ...some what confusing. When the food arrived the cutlery was covered in finger prints, only one very thin napkin was supplied. My baked potato was on the low end of average with barely anything to the salad. My partners fry up was completely wrong. He ordered asked for no black pudding or tomato.. ..it came with both. To top it off the knives were so blunt I couldn't cut into the potato skin, thus leaving half of my tiny meal. I wish we had waited and gone somewhere else. Sad visit :( Leek was our first and last visit. Nothing there. Bad manors everywhere.... traffic awful getting in and 10x worse...
