We all know that Manchester United are part of football history, I had been there many years ago when Wembley was being rebuilt but this was my first time as an away supporter. There's numerous places to park around Old Trafford and I chose media city as its a little further out but not too far. From the outside Old Trafford looks impressive but I have to say I was underwhelmed with the facilities inside for away fans... We were in one of the safe standing areas, it was a smaller block but as we climbed the stairs we found ourselves in this ridiculously small food and drink area. On offer was the choice of one lager ( Carling, really ) and one cider. I naively thought there must be more up the next set of stairs, but no.... So we had a swift drink before the game but decided against going down at half time because it was going to be far too busy. Theres a good reason its safe standing because when we sat down at half time we had to shoe horn ourselves in, even my son who is a little over five foot was uncomfortable. As for the atmosphere itself, well they don't call them the tourist club for no reason, all the "fans" with their mega store bags full of tat. All you could hear was the away fans for the most part of the game... what a soulless place it is. You could tell some of the Stretford End were singing something, but in the vast vacuum that is Old Trafford it got lost, the only time the place came to life was when they scored and the inevitable whistles near the end of the game as Man U clung on to win. Should Luton manage to stay up this season I won't be trying to get an away ticket again, someone else can put up with their bang average away supporter...
Read moreWent to the Derby and have to admit the crowd control outside the ground was appalling .The worst experience I had going to Man Derbies for over 20 years which has always been an anxious time for any fan but more a Ccity fan walking down to the away end. Flares were being lit without a oy being censured Despite being heavily policedand having areas where security were supposed to collect alcohol ( bottles or cans) well clear from the area where tickets were checked prior to going into the the so called sagf area for away fans. As we're quequing to go through the turnstiles we're we're subjected to a shower of beers cans mostly filled . These projectile were thrown from Utd fans congregating behind a line of police who were just standing and watching their antics. This really was like going back in time to over 10 years ago. So different to our experience at Elland Road a ground historically known for fan issues. Where we were directed to an roofed tunneledl area channelling away fans to the turnstiles. We hardly saw Leeds fans and those we did where easing going and chatting about football issues without any abusive language and behaviour. Inside the ground was a completely different matter well and politely stewarded as is has been for the last decade or so. As ever I thank everyone inside the ground to ensure our safety as different from outside the ground where the police and stewards wanted just to move fans on rather than deal with the trouble makers who were cleanly...
