I had high expectations for Giovannis On The Hayes, given their supposed awards and claims of serving authentic Italian cuisine. What a joke! This was hands down one of the worst food and dining experiences I’ve ever had. The food was absolutely inedible and clearly not fresh. Dishes were poorly cooked, looked like they were just lobbed on the plate and made from what tasted like frozen ingredients. The so-called truffle ravioli (which costs over £22!) was undercooked, with a horrible soggy dough texture, topped with rocket that had gone old and wilted. The pizza? Soggy dough in the middle. Frozen mussels? Disgusting. The grainy ricotta salmon ravioli was revolting, and the tortellini carbonara tasted nothing like what it should. To make matters worse, when we raised these issues, we were met with a rude, impolite waitress with black hair and glasses. She completely dismissed our complaints and stormed off in a strop – utterly unprofessional behaviour. Sure, the polite waiter and manager apologised, but their efforts couldn’t salvage the horrible food, service, or the way we were treated. For the high prices they charge and their so-called accolades, I expected a dining experience that would at least meet basic standards. Instead, it was an overpriced disaster. Do yourself a favour and AVOID this place if you want a respectful authentic and memorable Italian meal. There are far better options out there!

During our Wales-Trip we also spent some time in Beautiful Cardiff and went to Giovanni's restaurant only by accident, because the queue at Wagamama was pretty long and we are hungry. So what should we say. The restaurant was also pretty crowded, but they suggested a place downstairs, quiet and silent....maybe not everyone would like this....but it was perfekt for us. We got served by a really nice and kind waitress, she gave good recommendations and it was really nice to talk with her about how she came to Italy and Wales, about languages and so on....thats the kind of conversation we really like, not only smalltalk, also something private. I took a seafood-risotta and my wife a nice pasta with prawns. A great bruscetta opfront and we shared a nice Tiramisu at at the end. The waitress, I think her name was Jessy recommended the Tiramisu because it was made by her and to be honest, it was one of the best Tiramisus we had since years....even in Italy it is not sure to finde such a nice piece of fresh, handmade Tiramisu. Nothing to complain from our side, even Germans are known as born complainers. We had a nice time here for a reasonable price and when we come back one day to Cardiff, we will step in to Giovanni's again for sure. Thank you very much!

Well, where to start. We ate here a couple of years ago and hoped it retained the same atmosphere and standards when we revisited Cardiff this weekend, sadly not so. From a pretty brusque welcome the four of us were shown to a dark and dingy basement which has seen better days; with holes in the carpet, a damp smell and parts of the wall falling off. It was so badly lit we could hardly see each other. The waitress was harassed and seemed to be the only one working, covering tables in the street and downstairs. Drinks were pricey and no ice bucket or cooler for wine, plus lemonade sold out (there's a Tesco up the road). It took an hour for three pasta dishes and one pizza to arrive. I've given two stars as the food was the only saving grace, tasty and good portions. The music; a clarinet or trumpet version of various songs including Billie Eilish and Michael Bublé was torture. Then to top it all the poor fish in the tank behind us appeared to die. Toilets were grubby, as was the whole place really. Such a shame, our waitress was lovely but what else can I say, disastro!

We visited the restaurant on the hays on Thursday 25/08 at lunchtime. we have the restaurant several times before and always had excellent service and food. On this occasion we were greeted by a middle aged gentlemann who i assumed was the manager or one of the owners. The restaurant, quite busy so i said have you a table for two, he turned around and walked to the back, we followed him and he pulled out a chair and walked away. A young lady came up after we sat down and offered us a menu. We ordered Chicken in a cream peppercorn sauce with vegetables and potatoes, we also ordered Two glasses of Red wine and some water. A little later the same gentleman we had met when we came in walked up and plonked and i mean plonked two Pasta meals down in front of us and walked off !!! I looked at my wife and called the young lady over who had taken our order, i said I'm sorry but this is not the chicken we ordered, she apologised and said this is for another table. after a little while she delivered our correct meal which as usual was fantastic. We asked for the bill and again this gentleman came put the bill on the table and walked off. at no stage was there any conversation or how was our meal, nothing. We went to the front of the restaurant he took the bill of me which was £55 i said you can take £60 i paid with my phone,,. At no stage was there any acknowledgement of the tip, which was for the young lady who served us, he was rude and ignorant and had no regard for us attending his restaurant his service...

Absolutely horrendous. My friends and I were just looking for an enjoyable evening out instead of going to Prom. Service = terrible. 1 friend was left waiting for a drink after ours had already arrived and I was left waiting for my food after everybody else's had arrived. Not only was that infuriating, but the manager (I assume) wouldnt leave another friend alone to eat his soup and he was sat there waiting for this man to leave him alone so he could eat. After we had eaten our meal we asked for the bill and added up how much we had spent each, and then payed. We were then informed we were £10 short. Frantically trying to figure out were we had gone wrong, and another friend noticed it was the tip. Now, correct me if I am mistaken, but tips are optional. Not mandatory, and as a result we should not have been forced into paying the tip they demanded.

Fair to say that we are all fuming at this point and just want to leave. We pay the tip and took away the spare change we had left for them willingly.

My dad phoned up later that evening and gets incredibly frustrated at the lies they are spouting. Within 5 minutes they have changed their stories from not charging us a tip to saying they charged us £10. Then going on to say they will refund us the tip if we live local enough to go retrieve it, more evidence they knew they were in the wrong. Absolutely horrified that this type of service is deemed acceptable. Will not be...
