After hesitating a little due to the mixed reviews I decided to book lunch here because the online menu had really clear labelling for dairy and gluten free food.
Positives. The food we had was really good and the portion sizes appreciated after our 12km hike to get there. The Dairy free burger my son had was great and the fish (and chips) I ordered tasted really fresh with really good thin and crispy batter. The absolute highlight for me though was the mushy peas, absolutely the best I've ever tasted.
The waitress we had was really polite and helpful, we waited a little longer to order than we'd have expected given the place was only about half full but a single waitress appeared to be doing everything herself, with a smile, and she was obviously doing her best.
Negative. The chap lounging behind the bar appeared to be bored and ignored us when we entered, didn't seem bothered when we asked about our table, stayed sitting, nodding vaguely ahead saying it's probably that one. (Positive - The waitress quickly appeared, seated us etc). The barman did seem a bit more engaging towards the end of our visit when I saw him serving drinks to another group.
The atmosphere was quiet and I can understand people interpreting it as subdued. We were quite happy with the peaceful vibe but it did perhaps feel a bit too quiet for a beach front pub midweek in August.
I'd happily visit again for the food if I was staying in the area but would be prepared for delays in service if the one waitress...
Read moreI'd been to this pub before whilst on holiday in the area with my family. The food had been pretty good, and the service friendly and efficient. So when I was in the area again on business, I recommended the same place to a colleague - a decision I came to regret.
I ordered the home made steak pie and so did my colleague. The food arrived quickly, but when it was given to us, the landlady apologised that the tops of the pies were "quite brown". What she actually meant was "cremated".
I tried to eat mine, but the top was so black and the pastry had been baked to the consistency and texture of concrete. It really shouldn't have been sent out of the kitchen in that condition and pretty much all of the pastry was left on my plate uneaten. Similarly for my colleague's meal.
When the plates were collected, I complained to the waiter about the burnt food. He was very apologetic and said he would let the chef know about our complaint. We waited quite some time, even bought more drinks at the bar, but nobody came out of the kitchen to apologise or explain. To be honest, I was too embarrassed (after having recommended this place to my colleague) to complain or make a fuss in front of him.
Unfortunately, we had paid up front. I felt like asking for my money back, but just wanted to get away. I...

Over the recent bank holiday we visited Haverfordwest and had a meal at The Galleon Inn with a beer.
The Brains bitter was, I have to say a very nice pint of beer, however the meals that followed were not in the same league!
I had the Tuna steak, which looked a reasonable steak when it came out to me, however on tasting it, the chef had decided that the steak was that poor that he would smother it in sweet chili sauce (not on the menu when ordered) needless to say, it tasted of chili sauce and nothing else, for £11 it was rubbish! Worth £3!
My partner had the sea food platter which was basically frozen fried, what we think was food, but we are not sure? Rubbish!
The service was very poor, with the waitress not even asking how the food was so no opportunity to complain, very poor table wear, no condiments and some old mat I think had been on the back of a horse before making it to the table.
In short, nice beer, rubbish everything else!
Score 3/10
I would not recommend that anyone visits this place for food and considering how dirty the pub and eating area was, I would be interested to see how the kitchen was kept.
At least we...
