Yep ...Its OK - Its a Wetherspoons so there is a basic standard that will always be maintained, for instance the bar. For a lover of real ales, it's just paradise! Off the top of my head there was Speckled Hen @ £2.48 per pint, Abbott Ale @ £2.68 and Ruddles for just £1.74 per pint... and these weren't on offer! There were more but I can't remember. Food looked great, definitely good value and excellent attention to detail with calorific value listed for every meal on the menu.
The pub itself was clean, not overly so ... I'd give it 7/10 - considering how busy it was, that's good! There was a good system in place to keep the tables free from crockery & glasses...so good that I never saw ANY empty glasses or dirty dishes around the bar or lounge areas - the bar & service staff deserve every penny they get! This place actually IS a hotel. I never got to see the rooms, however, I suspect that they will be clean & good value.
It is worth noting that this particular site ALLOWS service dogs 🐕 ... contrary to other JDW sites that choose not to challenge the No Exception ruling on pets (& livestock!). The decision DIRECTLY affects, and, indeed is aimed at ... DOGS. Every JDW establishment in England (Scotland & Wales may/might differ) refuses entry to dogs, INCLUDING ... SERVICE DOGS ...Now, (this is MY interpretation of their rules... so please check before booking this, or any other JDW establishment for the 'Visually Impaired, Golf Professional of The Year Awards'), JDW pubs & hotels operate a blanket ban on dogs 🐕 😀. To avoid confusion, that's any dog, anywhere, any-time...that includes service/guide dogs 🐕 ☹...and before the, 'I know everything' brigade jump up & scream, 'They can't ban service dogs! That's discrimination!' ... no, it isn't. It's private property, and, its completely up to the OWNER of that property whether or not dogs...however fantastically wonderful they may be, crosses the threshold ... so save your finger.
Think about it this way. Let's say you decided to host the AGM for 'Visually Impaired Cross Dressers' at your house. You own the property, 'Freehold' (without lien or mortgage). You put up flyers on every notice board locally that you can think of - in the flyers you state that, 'Please Be Advised that due to the venue owners Dog Allergy, that No DOGS Are Allowed, to reiterate, at this year's AGM - NO DOGS ALLOWED...No Exceptions, This INCLUDES Service Dogs.'
Clearly, the gentleman's kind offer would be overshadowed and his phone would immediately, eventually, be hot with misdialled telephone calls from angry cross dressers from all over England. But - He would be completely entitled to impose this condition. It isn't the duty of the host to expose himself to the cause of his irritations. The law provides that if the subject so wishes he can simply refrain from exposure by barring anybody with a dog from entering his premises. Even though he had prior extended graciously an extremely generous offer to host the AGM - in his capacity as owner of the intended venue, he can simply impose this condition on the prospective attendees.
I hope you enjoy...
Read moreIr would have been two but my son stayed here a couple of weeks ago and had better service and food. I went with a colleague for breakfast and found it the worst experienced in a Wetherspoons though, perhaps just a little below average for the industry.
The place is old but it doesn't have to be so messy and worn. It needs tidying and at least light refurbishment.
Reception was borderline surly and, no, our phone security does not roll over to the demand to put sundry apps for someone else's convenience into them. The usual 'Spoons lukewarm water from the tea machine if there is a queue and it can't go fast enough.
Our breakfast was brought and plonked down in a peremptory manner and was disappointing from the first as it looked small and lost in the centre of a large plate and even then spaces left between items to try to fill the voids!
The egg was small and overcooked, I suspect the yolk had been broken but no certainty as it was cooked solid. My bacon was a couple of soft rags though my companion received a whole (small) rasher, again soft. The beans were quite stale as if they'd dried out a little overnight and had been reheated. The one highlight was the sausage. Washed down with lukewarm tea this breakfast was, as I've noted, the worst 'Spoons breakfast I've encountered.
My son tells me that the 'breakfast breakfast' is inferior to the 'all day breakfast'. Maybe the reason for the difference lies somewhere in the timings?
Oh, and someone needs to stop the delivery trucks blocking the disabled parking, I've observed this a couple of times and ended up helping one customer who otherwise would hove found getting...
Read moreThe short story is it’s absolutely perfect. I stayed in a single room ( second visit in recent weeks- this review applies to both stays) Cosy room- perfect size for one person. They haven’t squeezed a double bed in a small room, so they know what they are doing. Desk and hanging space with an ironing board- All the usual comforts, including excellent air con. Window over the kitchen in the centre of the building so no view, but not a problem. Bathroom was lovely - looks new and modern- perfect. The hotel is part of an old coaching inn, so the stairs and corridors are in keeping with the old world feel- there’s a lift if needed. Modern reception, and the key card gets you into the hotel from the pub or the hotel reception- works great. The pub is typical Wetherspoons, which is never bad, but the food is that bit better - someone in the kitchen cares about presentation and quality. There’s lots of rooms in the pub, and a nice terrace beer garden that gets the evening sun. I just can’t fault the place. I could imagine a week long break at this hotel being excellent. |The night rate, price of food and drink, and the location in the centre of Monmouth make this place my go-to when I’m travelling to south wales. WiFi in the rooms was hit and miss- if I needed WiFi for work I’d take my laptop down to the bar. That’s the only thing I could think of that would stop me giving it 10/10, but that’s...
