Took my mother here today (Monthers Day) along withe the rest of my family, pre-booked both table and food for 9 people. We were seated 30mins after we arrived which wasn't a problem as the staff were very busy. But then got told by the Manager they had ran out of the soup we Pre-ordered, "got damaged" was the excuse, so we chose something else, then 10 minutes later we we informed there wasn't enough of our second choice. It just went from bad to worse. One starter came out, it was cold, another 10 minutes passed and we got the rest of the starters. One of which had a film on top where it had obviously been sat under a heater for some time! Then after another long wait we got our mains. Most of us had roast dinner, which was Poor at best, meat was tough, sausages were burnt, the kids meals didn't come with any gravy, vegetables were well over done. Yorkshire pudding was cold. Most of us left nearly all of the food. We also had desserts ordered, the Ice cream was like water, and they had just totally forgotten 3 other desserts. Normally the food here is quite good, but i wouldn't go back. If anyone is thinking of going here for a 'special day' have...
Read moreJune 2017 under new ownership after Wetherspoons sold off some properties, this place has had a needed facelift, but not much has really changed; at one point we were wondering what was actually different and the main change appears to be the main bar has changed position slightly.
For a venue taking the name of the old library that was situated here there wasn't much history that I could notice, whereas Wetherspoons wherever they go do have a nod to the local history. The beer garden is a definite improvement with the TV screens, but I've got to say it was ridiculously smokey. Ordered "nachos" but upon looking at the receipt they'd put it through as "mini nachos" and based on how busy it was we couldn't bother trying to go back and get the order changed.
Originally reviewed in March 2017 when this place was the Jug and Jester which was a Wetherspoons. The convenience to the train station gave it an extra star than usual. Good textbook Wetherspoons experience. As I said in my original comment, it would have been better if the complete dump sister pub on the Parade was sold off rather...
Read moreWe ate here today, weekday lunch. The pub was not busy, appeared clean and decently appointed. Service was prompt, and staff were friendly and courteous. The food here is relatively inexpensive, a welcome relief these days, but there is a reason. Honestly, it's sub-par. My wife's curry can with a piece of flaccid while flatbread. God only knows what it was supposed to be but I wouldn't feed to ducks let alone a human. I had a bacon cheeseburger with waffle fries. The fries were OK but could have been warmer. My guess is they came out of a warming drawer. There was something about the burger I couldn't put my finger on until I was in the car on the way home. It tasted like the burgers you buy at Circle Ks in America wrapped in foil from a warming case -- meaning, I am pretty sure, they were pre-cooked and reheated. I'd say the same for the bacon. As I said, very budget priced but I wouldn't rush back...
