Oriental Delight — Restaurant in Wirral

I ordered a takeaway here last night and I have mixed feelings. I recently found out via social media that this restaurant caters to coeliacs which is also stated on their website. When looking at the gluten free menu I was excited to try the variety of items on said menu. However, when calling the restaurant to make the order I found out most of the gluten free menu isn’t actually safe for coeliacs. Which I know does happen but it was MOST of the menu so it was quite limiting. They also do not have a dedicated fryer. Now the person on the phone was very knowledgeable on the ingredients and dishes which was great, and they did offer me a fried rice dish or BBQ ribs as an alternative for the salt and pepper ribs on the GF menu I originally wanted. The BBQ ribs were not on the gluten free menu but they were very good. I found it a little confusing, I think I perhaps would have had a better experience eating at the restaurant. Wanted to treat myself and my partner to some good Chinese food after long working week. Chose Oriental Delight due to the reviews. What a disappointment this was. We had deal for two, with soup, starters and main course. The hot and sour soup was inedible, it was so thick that it was difficult to put the spoon in the bowl. Like eating hot jelly. My partner had sweetcorn and chicken soup, which in consistency also resembled jelly. Both tasted of nothing. The starters were better, but the spring rolls tasted rubbery and as if made of old vegetables. The mains were garlic and chill pork and black bean sauce pork. The pork was soft but a lot of it had fat around it and little meat. The black bean sauce was way to hot and difficult to eat for a non - chilli eaters. Overall, the whole experience was terrible, overpriced (£50 with just one beer and soda) and put us off from eating Chinese food for another 10 years. The only positive thing was the service. As NYE fell on a Sunday, our usual take away was closed. I rang Oriental Delight ahead to see if we could order and was reassured that they could cater for us. Being gluten free and veggie our choices for takeaway or eating out are always very limited. This restaurant has a separate gluten free section on their menu which is amazing! I collected our food and was warmly welcomed. The restaurant was full and very busy so it was fantastic that they were able to fit us in at short notice. The food itself was outstanding. People with dietary requirements don't want to have to ask a member of staff what they can and can't eat. It's embarrassing and uncomfortable.
