4/2023 I went to a lot of trouble to be able to come to hickory street today for the first time during their very short hours in probably a year. My experience began with multiple phone calls that went unanswered over half an hour before I stopped trying. I needed to call in a to go. When I arrived at the restaurant there was a sign on the pick up window stating they weren't doing to gos that day. Had they answered the phone or added a recording I wouldve known. The hostess reiterated this when I told her I couldn't stay for the long wait because I had my dog in the car and it was hot. I take my support dog most places with me. My husband, who was working miles away, really wanted chicken salad from their restaurant however so I made the long trip to my house and back for a table. Once I was sat I ask if I could take some extra chicken salad with me. My waitress said the kitchen would not do even this because "they were short". I didnt understand that until I heard the very loud, snarky protests from the nearby kitchen in response to a different waitress asking for a to go salad for a table. "Ive already done x number of to go items so whats another!" "Whats it matter anymore". I felt bad for that waitress. Then later in response to a customer complaint "See thats why I try to ignore people!".

Im sorry but I dont understand the logic behind such a rigid no to go policy coupled with no phone answering or a recording to inform the customer. It is flat inconsiderate towards patrons. How does it change the time invested in an order anyway? It probably doesn't take as much time to wait a table as it does to bag an order. Why can't an exception be made when someone has an animal in the car and had no means of knowing about your policy in advance? The food was ok and to me the place is way over hyped.. I wont be returning or...

I've been here a few times before and it was always wonderful. Not so this time. The broccoli parmesan soup was tasteless so I returned it and the sandwich was mediocre. My waitress did not ask if I'd like anything in replace of the soup nor did she ask if we wanted dessert or take home containers when she brought the check. I asked if it would be deducted from my check and she said nothing in response as she wisked away the cash for my tab and debit card for my friend's. Shortly thereafter, she returned the debit card but never brought back my change. She and 2 other employees were talking about a customer at the next table over in front of all the other customers. Having waited for quite some time, I eventually got up and asked the hostess for take home containers and my change. She immediately brought the container and interrupted the employee conversation to inquire about my change. Our waitress brought back the change with no reduced price for the uneaten soup, no answer as to why, no apology, no thank you and no "have a nice day". There were other items to note but space is limited. Very disappointed on multiple layers, especially the lack of courtesy and customer service! I will go to Sweet Thyme Kitchen next...

This is such a great lunch spot! Went with a friend, and we both ordered the same thing. The Salad Sampler with Maple Vinaigrette. It came with their very popular chicken salad, a pasta salad with chicken, and a garden salad. It also came with 2 pieces of zucchini bread. I liked the pasta salad with chicken. It was tangy, and the chicken had good texture but not really any flavor. The chicken salad was a flavor bomb in your mouth! Wow! Awesome flavor. BUT I got WAY too many fatty, rubbery, grisly pieces to be able to thoroughly enjoy it, which was a bummer. But I did eat the pieces that I could tell would have a good texture. I ordered their vegetable of the day quiche, to go, which was a broccoli mushroom. It was delicious! I also ordered a bowl of broccoli parmesan soup to go and did not like the texture of this soup at all, but the flavor was very good! It was goopy. Reminded me of paper mache glue. The raspberry iced tea was very good. It's not too sweet, very refreshing. I will go back because it's a nice spot for lunch. But I will definitely try other things or maybe stick...

Hickory Street Cafe is a must if you’re in Abilene, Texas. This cafe that serves up some of the best homemade zucchini bread that you’ll ever come across and can be bought in loaves to go, is only open during the week for lunch. It also serves salads, sandwiches, soups and other fresh baked goods. The children’s menu includes Mac and cheese, which was a hit with some of our group. The chicken salad and quiche were also made with fresh ingredients. I had a sandwich with a side of the cream of potato soup and fresh fruit cup topped with yogurt… delightful combination. And what’s better than a good meal served with a raspberry ice tea with free refills. It was a charming atmosphere in a historic home with very tasty food. In fact we bought a few loaves of the zucchini bread to take back home because it was that good. Tip - make reservations to make sure there’s a table available. Highly recommend!

First time here, it will not be my last! Came after lunch rush and it was peaceful, but I’m sure even with a ton of people the food/service no doubt would still be just as excellent! Words couldn’t express the attentiveness our waitress provided! (Unfortunately I cannot remember her name! Sorry!) and the front desk lady gave the most warm welcoming and cheery feel! The atmosphere was bright and airy. The decor was spectacular and gave you a farm/cottage house feel. We had the Philly cheesesteak, chicken salad sandwich, and the side fixings of pasta salad, broccoli cheddar soup, potato sticks, zucchini bread (absolutely delicious!!) , paired with their sweet iced peach tea! Please, if it’s a lovely day or even a rainy one… stop in and have brunch or lunch! You will not be disappointed!
