During a recent visit to a new Haitian restaurant in Aiken, SC, I had the pleasure of trying griot, a dish my family prepares, consisting of fried pork, served with rice and beans, fried plantains, and pickliz. The meal, which I encourage you to try, includes pickliz, a salsa-like condiment that adds flavor and heat, as well as red sauce to provide additional moisture to the rice if needed. I also ordered Jon Jon, a black rice and bean dish made with a product derived from black mushrooms. Although the meal was enjoyable, with the plantains being a highlight, the owner apologized for not having green plantains available. However, the sauce served with the rice and beans was underwhelming and detracted from the overall experience. Moreover, the pickliz lacked heat and the characteristic lime and vinegar flavor. Considering this is a new establishment, I am willing to give them another chance. I recommend that others approach this restaurant with an open mind and try their offerings.
