Billie’s Diner has set a new standard, and redefined what a diner is for me. Perhaps that’s not fair to the other diners that serve good food, just by adding more cheese, more butter, more fried food, and heavier plates, but the experience at Billie’s is just different altogether. When you go there, it’s obvious they treat you perfectly from the second you walk through the door. There is no awkward period of time trying to catch someone’s attention, just to get on the list to be seated. It’s like the people there really pay attention to the faces walking through the door, and treat you like an actual person, rather than just another possible “good tip” a half hour after they seat you. I could go on and on about the hospitality, but the real important part is the reason you go in the first place… the food! This is the real difference maker, and what puts Billie’s diner a head and neck above most others. The old sentiment of “Farm Fresh” is an understatement for these folks. They detail every farm/supplier they get their delicious and fresh ingredients from, down to the mushrooms and pickles. They don’t skip any corners, including the bread for their burgers (absolutely delectable), to the seasoning on their fries, to the oh so desirable complexity of their fry sauce. And when you put it altogether, the experience is just beyond words. It’s been a long time since I’ve stopped eating, take a drink of my ice tea, take a deep breath…. then take the time to look my wife in the eyes, get her full and undivided attention, and purposely say loud enough for the people in front and behind us to hear, “this is a really good burger,” and I said it with almost a confused look on my face like I didn’t even understand what was happening in my mouth. After my very pleasant lunch experience, I offered a compliment to the owner explaining she had been successful in redefining diner food, and she didn’t even know what to think!? I made it clear she has done well, and perhaps it wasn’t fair to her to call her nearly intangible creations “diner food” maybe even afterward she is thinking oh big deal I made it a point to get good ingredients, and let everyone know what we put in our meals… but this goes a long, long way with people like me, and certainly ANYONE can taste the difference! Thank you very much!
If there is a legit foody out there, I invite you to go in, experience what I experienced, do your interview with the owner, and write your detailed news article of approval for all of the PNW to see . Very...
Read moreWe have always enjoyed going to Billie’s for a special meal, but today was very disappointing. My husband ordered the Farmer’s Breakfast, and the eggs were under seasoned, and the tiny cup of fruit consisted of an orange wedge or two and a few blueberries. His plate was pretty sparse, although I understand he chose fruit over hashbrowns. I ordered the French dip, asked about and was told they don’t have horseradish. I prefer it with horseradish, but really, no big deal—every restaurant is different. Menu says it is served with fries and fry sauce, and I was told they haven’t made the fry sauce yet today—weird since my meal was served after 1:00 pm, and they close at 2:00. I was offered Ranch as a dipping sauce instead, however, when it arrived, it was so thin that it dripped right off of the fries. I asked the waitress if I could possibly get just a small amount of their garlic mayo to stir into the ranch to give it some “body” for dipping, which greatly helped the ranch, and I added a little ketchup to the remaining mayo, which made a wonderful fry sauce. When we received the bill, we were charged $.75 for the mayo that would not have been necessary if their advertised fry sauce had been available, or the ranch the thickness you would typically expect for even a salad dressing. The waitress agreed to take the extra charge off this one time, and then scolded me, telling me that it was a one time deal, and that it would not be done again, and snipped that I had come in angry and had been angry through my whole meal! I assure you, she would have known if I was angry… She doubled down when I tried to talk to her, calmly as I had been through the entire time we were there, again stating I had been angry, and that IF we ever come back again, we would not be accommodated. I asked my husband specifically if I out of angry vibes, and he said “no", but that she had has an attitude the entire time we were there and just seemed very unhappy to be there. He could see how she treated other customers as well..
I hope the owners understand that Megan, who was slow to wait on us to even bring us water, never checked back on us after serving our meal, avoided us, and chastised us over a $.75 condiment, and then spoke to me with such disrespect, cost them customers that have held this restaurant in high regards, as well as the fact that we will no longer be able to recommend this restaurant to our friends. That was really expensive mayo,...
Read moreWhat a complete surprise to find this little gem of a diner! On a recent trip to the Spokane area we came across Billie’s Diner. Thanks to a Google search for “best breakfast near me” we tried Billie’s Diner and it truly lived up to the search request.
Not only did we eat breakfast there one morning, we went back the following two mornings. Yes - their food is that good! And the coffee is great! Always fresh and our cups were never empty.
On our first visit we ordered the Ham and Cheddar scramble with hash browns and sourdough toast. It was a feast! The next morning we ate a little lighter and ordered the one egg, toast, and bacon. Eggs were cooked to perfection and the bacon was excellent. The next day, we decided to make it a brunch meal and ordered the West Plains Burger. The hamburger patty was cooked to order and the fries were hot and fresh. If you order fries with a meal I strongly suggest that you get the fries sauce. It is sooooo good.
It’s important to note that the jam that we were served with our toast is Billie’s homemade raspberry jam. If we could have packed some in our luggage we would have. It’s that good.
In addition to our meals we also had their blueberry muffins to take along with us for our road trip on our last day there. Oh. My. Goodness. These muffins! So, so good. I may or may not be drooling as I write this.
Now, while food information is important service goes hand in hand. The servers at Billie’s are top notch and let’s be honest a big part of the reason people become regular customers - if we lived closer we would definitely be regular customers. These ladies are kind, friendly, always have a smile, and always check to see if anything is needed and if orders meet expectations. We had the pleasure of visiting with and being served by Red, Megan, and Courtney. Ladies, we loved meeting you and spending time with each of you. What a treat!
If you are in the area of Billie’s Diner your only disappointment will be in not stopping by. When you go, tell them Bob and...
