I had heard about the Boiling House on the radio, and was excited to try it. We didn’t know exactly what we were getting into with this place, but it was, unequivocally, the weirdest meal either of us has ever eaten. It has an upscale decor, and the price tag to go with it, yet you eat out of a broasting bag, on a high school cafeteria lunch tray, sitting on a paper table cover, drinking out of a styrofoam cup, adorned with a plastic bib around your neck. It’s like a hipster and a 2 year old designed the restaurant, and if there was such a thing a Red Lobster chiç, this is it.
Some of the food was tasty, but SO MESSY! You get a decent amount of seafood, itself, yet it’s an unbalanced meal. I got combo #3 which was 1/2lb snow crab, 1/2lb clams, and 1/2lb shrimp, and my husband got the lobster tails (3 for a fair market price).
His lobster tails were very consistent; each one was extremely dry, to the point even the full bulb of garlic/butter concoction, laying in the bottom of the bag, did nothing to assuage the texture. The sides are very small, being only a half a cob of corn and two, yes two, golf ball sized red potatoes (count ‘em, because you could, quite honestly, lose them in all the garlic).
Against our better judgement, we decided to splurge and pay for our dinner rolls, but opted NOT to spend the extra money on top of that, to actually have butter with them (the sea of garlic/butter served as a suitable topping). Honesty, the nickel and dime charges listed on the meal is laughable. I’m genuinely surprised the bibs were free.
If you are a fan of reducing waste this is not the place for you. The amount of disposable items is very noticeable. Styrofoam cups, plastic bags, plastic bibs, plastic gloves, etc. Our server was attentive, quick with refills, and very pleasant. All in all, our trip was not a complete waste, but this is not a place I’d...
Read moreFirst time doing the cajun seafood thing so I have no basis for comparison. I only know that what I tasted was awesome. The combo 1 was priced fair. 32 dollars for crab legs, shrimp, crawfish in abundance, a potato, and a corn on the (half) cob. I ate the entire serving because I knew the seafood wouldn't taste as good after being put in the fridge, but two people could have easily shared the bag. It was too good to save, though.
I chose the cajun seasoning with the medium heat and it cleaned out my nose, but it wasn't overbearing. It had a comfortable heat and was super flavorful. But there were other seasoning options for those who don't like kick. The potato and corn was a good change of texture between the seafood, but another potato and corn would have been nice. Not necessary, because there was so much food, but nice.
Service was great. Sat at the bar and had my ear phones on listening to a podcast so I wasn't too social, but the bartender was nice, attractive, and attentive without being annoying. What conversation I had with her when I wasn't being antisocial was pleasant and unforced.
Only reason I am giving the place a four is because it is a messy experience. It was actually fun to eat with your hands, and the messiness comes with the territory. You're given a bib and gloves (didn't use the gloves but used the bib), so it wasn't a fault on the establishment, itself. But I only give fives to places that I could go to anytime, and this is too messy to go to anytime. Also, the sidewalk and entrance area were blocked off by roadwork and was neither fun to walk through nor nice to look at. That said, I'll be coming back to check the other...
Read moreFirst time here today. The music is soooo loud!!!!
I got a couple appetizers , sushi and a few bites from my friends boil. Appetizers were ok. The sweet potatoes need cut a bit thicker in my opinion. The rock shrimp were good. But please salt things when you bring them up out of the fryer!! No seasoning whatsoever.
The sushi rolls that I got were good and fresh. I would possibly come back for that. My friend got the boil and I’m so sad to say this, but it had no flavor. How can a boil have zero flavor? (Salt goes a long way) She and her daughter said the portion and shrimp size is a lot smaller than other local boil places??
The thing that bothered us all the most was the gratuity that is automatically added to the check. It’s 10% (which isn’t bad) but gratuity is earned. I wanted to know who got that, so I asked the waitress does she get all of it, and she told us no. The sushi chef gets some of it. That’s probably why it’s added automatically. Which should be a “them” problem and not pass that onto us. That’s bad taste.
I’ve done my time being a server and bartender. That just doesn’t sit well and is off putting.
Also—-We were charged sales tax today even thought Ohio has NO sales tax the first 2 weeks of August. My friend was thinking about reporting them. All in all. I don’t know if I would return. The waitress was super sweet. The music is soooo loud — To me…...
