EVERY 3RD THURSDAY at The LOCK 4 The halled walls danced between the original sounds and songs played by three very good bands at the Lock 4 tonight. The Devil Strip brought together three different genres of music , and although different music styles were present , jazz , blues and reggae , there were more commonalities than differences . For one, all three bands had mainly their own songs, and I have to say, all three bands had more than a couple good songs. The night started with the young jazz masters, Acid Cats. I had the chance to see them the last they were here at the Akron Civic , and even though they played very well last time, they've just got better. The horizontal symmetry between trumpet and sax harmonies were equal to Umojah's Nation's female backing choral vocals , outstanding . The lead guitarist choice notes and chord movements ranged from Chuck Berry's to George Benson. The drummer as Miles Davis puts it, can sit in the pocket and keep it all moving together. Miles worried about what will happen to the melody. Well, Miles, rest easy , for The Acid Cats have that covered.
Hayden Gilbert and the Rukus has this soulful thick slick blues. I really enjoyed the beef to his chops. I really do hope to hear more from him and his band.
The night all came to , what would seem to be an extension coming down from Highland's PorchRockr fest , for everyone who was related to some fashion in art were dancing in some form. Seriously, out of the 150 to 200 people who attended, a good percentage were dancing to the songs of Umojah Nation. You had the talented Hula Hoop Art Dancing girls there , the long hairs, pixies ,barefooted ,high heels ,flowing hands ,clapping hands ,all smiling and groving to the reggae sounds of original songs like Strike ,as well as others. All three of these bands should certainly be in the gotta go see box on your smartphone. I checked out The Devil Strips FaceBook page and they seem to be a very decent source for being in the (Now&Know of Akron's Art Scene) . Oh, you can get free Akron Rubber Ducks Baseball tickets from The Devil Strip too. I picked up a couple. Thanks peoples.

Read moreThis is my favorite park for an outdoor workout. It's easy to run around downtown and then end up here for a full body workout with stairs and large concrete stairs to jump and run up. There is easy access to lock 4 from lock 3 via a path that runs along the buildings. There is a little bit of street parking in the area, but with current construction, parking on Main Street and entering though lock 3 is the easiest way to get here. There are really nice Adirondack chairs as well as metal chairs and tables that are set up all the time. There is a snack hut, but I've never seen it actually open. My only reason for giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that there is a relatively new drinking fountain that has never been functional and I would really appreciate a nice drink...
Read moreI visited Lock 4 Park for a University of Akron event and it's such a nice outdoor space. Parking nearby is easy, there are lots of places for small groups to mingle, you can see and hear the water going by in the canal. Lock 3 is great for big events, concerts etc. Cascade Plaza is good for the food truck festival and medium sized events, and Lock 4 is perfect for something smaller. It's so enjoyable to have all 3 spaces for enjoying...
