My husband raved about how good this place was. So we went there for breakfast. We were seated quickly. However, it was a good 15 to 20 mins before we even got asked for our drink order. Now before that was taken, two gentlemen were seated next to us approximately 15 mins after we sat down. No sooner were they seated the waitress was asking them what they wanted to drink. Turns out she was our waitress and not even theirs. She saw me whip my head around because they were getting taken care of before we have even been greeted and ask for our drinks choices. I am all about understanding when things are busy and it was definitely busy. Especially with a big table in the back. That and lucky for us was also our waitress table. Now our waitress did finally ask what we wanted to drink. She was nice and polite and we knew she was struggling and stretched thin. It did take another at least 15 mins to get our drinks and we finally got our order in. So we’ve been sitting at our table for at least 40 to 45 mins before even ordering our food. Then the waiting game began again. It wasn’t just us either seemed everyone around us except what seemed to be the “regulars “ were waiting on our food for at least 40 to 45 mins. I am very forgiving of slow service when the food is worth waiting for. In this case, it was not! Me personally I ordered the veggie omelet with home potatoes or country potatoes whichever they are called. They we’re under cooked and weren’t even crispy if you know what I mean…. My veggies were barely sautéed before eggs were added and the eggs even still had some undercooked areas. The pancake was awesome!! The Mocha coffee was delicious. Our waitress although we didn’t see her very often she did come by often enough to see to our drinks and I know she was giving her best. We were cashed out by the manager and when my husband was asked how everything was he said it was alright all except the huge wait time. This woman couldn’t even offer an apology for the long wait on EVERYTHING except the seating time. She literally catered to the regulars and didn’t seem to care one bit about any of the other customers that had been waiting a really long time. If it wasn’t for the waitresses waiting on these tables it was the only thing that made the wait time bearable. Far as I am concerned that manager should have been in the kitchen helping her cook staff bust them foods out. That way the food could have at least been cooked properly! Anywhere and anything more then what she was doing because it wasn’t enough to make that restaurant run smoothly for a Friday morning early afternoon. Definitely could have done better but could have been worse. Still left a decent tip because everything was correct and drinks stayed filled. Everything just took too long. Thanks for doing your best Brittany I do believe was our waitress’s name. Hope it got...
Read moreDriving through Amarillo we were excited to see they had a Calico County as I grew up eating there after church every Sunday with my family as a child in Lawton, OK. We stopped passing through. We got there 30 mins before closing and knowing that we tried to be curtious of their time. We ordered right away drinks, appetizer, meals and dessert togo. It all came at the same time too including appetizer. My daughter's kids pot pie was just like chicken soup no "pie" I was excited to get the grilled catfish and it came fried. The waitress was humble enough to admit she made the mistake and would take it back. I said. "No. Yall are about to close I will just eat it the way it is." She said, " I'll see if I can get it half off for you since it was my mistake." When it was addressed to the manager she told me I couldn't get the discount because I didn't send it back for remake. If I had sent it back for remake I would have got a discount. I told the .anager the waitress said she would ask since it was her mistake. Manager daid, "I dont know why she would tell you that, i am the only one who can make that decision" Makes no sense to me since the waitress admitted her mistake and i wasnt wasting food. To top it all off, we bussed our own table and tried to make it as easy as possible since we came in 30 min before closing. We tipped 20% and paid our full ticket approx $56. Some would say I shouldn't have tipped. However, the waitress tried to make it right, but her manager was rude and didn't accommodate. There was more that was disatisfying but I think you get the gist. I don't usually give bad reviews as I have my own food blog/tiktok that shows off local restaurants. I had hoped to showcase Calico County as it held so many memories for me. Two stars because it was clean despite its old facade and my dad and husband enjoyed their BLT sandwiches. Our waitress was pleasant despite her mistakes. UPDATE: I called the number below, as requested by the owner, and no one answered. The...
Read moreI've had some wonderful experiences here and a couple that were disappointing. The wonderful ones include the fish special at lunch, the Irish stew even though it is beef rather than lamb, and they are experts at fixing both beef and chicken liver if you like that, which I do. The chicken and dumplings was excellent also. The disappointments were the chicken pot pie which tasted like it came out of a can and both the chicken fried steak and the chicken fried chicken, surprisingly since I had heard good things about them from others. That may be just a matter of my personal taste. I'm not crazy about their side dishes because they are mostly mixtures rather than vegetables in there pure form and they seem quite salty which is not good for those of us that are watching our sodium. One of the most fun things is when they bring the rolls at the beginning which is usually at least a half dozen small rolls, half of them cinnamon spirals and half of them regular biscuits. All are delicious. They have a steak special for $12.99 and I did get that once and it was very good. Sometimes the service is great and sometimes not so great but I've had mostly good experiences with the service especially if they aren't super busy which they were the other night for sure. The restaurant was almost entirely full. Calico county has been in Amarillo for many years and it is a local favorite. I rarely make it here for breakfast although I do believe they have all day breakfast so I suppose I could have it even if I didn't get here till evening. All day breakfast is a plus in my book since I'm not an...
