First, food would get 5 stars...service gets 1.5 stars!
Food: The Cowboy special is a good deal- even with the.75 they charged me to sub a bun for the toast. It was enough for a sandwich (pulled pork) , and leftovers (brisket &ribs)..sides potato salad, coleslaw (yummy- great flavor..just enough of everything to balance the cabbage), beans, and small cup of apricots. Burger was a real patty and good size..charred just right.
Service: First 2 times I called, I was put in hold and the call was "disconnected". 3rd time I said I wouldnt hold and had order taken...ever get that feeling when someone is taking your order that they are really thinking there are 10 other things they would rather be doing? 🤔 Once I got there I realized its nit just the person on the phone..both younger employees were bordering downright unfriendly. ..I have ordered takeout enough to make sure everything is included before I leave..and since the girl was checking the order when I arrived, I just asked about condiments (ketchup, ranch, and the extra bbq I had asked for on the phone)...and she looked like I offended her by asking, and said it was "all in there" before walking away. I glanced in the bag and saw several cups so I left. When I called in the order, they say 15 minites. I called backless than 5 minutes later and added a baked potato...and waited 10-15 minutes longer once I got there. When I asked, the girl saud because I added stuff my order went to the back of the line....not sure where else a potato that is already cooked takes that long.
Once on the road..I found that apparently 1 cup for 2 bbq plates must ne considered "extra" 🙄... So overall..the food is worth the stop..but the front desk staff make me wonder if I should try...
Read moreThis restaurant has so much potential and some frustrating shortcomings for the customer. The BBQ is truly delicious. The ribs are special and worth taking note of with a smoky, sweet, savory, and tangy sauce. The brisket was melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Their tea was perfect as was their sweet, tangy, and creamy potato salad. The slaw was just okay, nothing to write home about. The toast was burnt however, but as toast not a big part of the meal. I was extremely sad about the bbq beans. I don't even know who would think to mix bbq sauce in water and pour boiled beans into it to serve, but is what it both appeared as and tasted like. The service was outstanding. I never needed anything and always had my waitress willing to answer questions and help. There is one last negative and positive. The negative is that I found it gross that a busboy had to squeeze between tables with a dirty cart to clear and empty dirty tables. Plates should be carried to the back (even if it requires more than one trip). The positive would be that the decorations and energy was very Texas and contained many decorations that were fun to ponder. Again, for me the pros outweigh the cons, but the cons really could use a fix. Ibwould certainly come back for more of those...
Read moreWhat a disapointment. BBQ is a tradition in Texas. Some say it is a religion. Here, it is forgettable! When I have an opportunity to eat BBQ, I find the best of the best but Dyer's is not one of those places. Upon arriving I asked thr hostess: Is this the best BBQ in Amarillo? She laughed and never answered. I guess she knows something I don't. From there, things got worse. I ordered the 3 piece meat. It food arrived cold and the wrong meats were on the plate; the brisket was dryer than a dead cow in the Sahara. The waitress never confirmed the order. I sent the plate back and ordered the pull pork sandwich. It was great and much better.
The main problem here seems to be the employees which are a reflection of management. The waitress was in hurry and never attempted to establish repore. She never asked to fill our drinks. She never checked the food before bring it out. The establishment was mostly empty. Dyer's is a cozy place but what happens in the kitchen is a guess to me. It looks like Dyer's has been around for a long time and the owners are nowhere to be found. On to my...
