Wake in Ambler, PA has its share of challenges. From other coffee shops in the area (Abyss being the closest example) to other breakfast places in the Ambler downtown strip, it has to be top-notch if it hopes to beat the locale.
It does a lot of good, but some just so-so things and even some bad things and I am here to give you the Pros and Cons!
Pros: Everything at Wake in the two separate taste tests have been fresh. Fresh ingredients are what the company strives for and you can tell from the orange juice served to the coffee beans.
The So-So: Their food sometimes are not served seasoned properly. Getting an avocado spread on toast without the avocado having being salt and pepper'd is weird at best, and eliminates the pop from the fresh avocado and makes it a mushy bland mess to hope for the relish to maintain it's flavor. If the toast is the biggest cost item on the menu, I want to be wow'd by it.
Their orange juice, while tasty and fresh, is Five dollars for about a cup and a half of juice if you were to measure the juice. No I am not exaggerating, and this equates to about 3 oranges.
Their menu, while offering many drink choices really offer very little in the respect of food. I am surprised, since there are plenty of things that can be made super fast that ultimately could be considered for a high revenue/low investment based on ingredients they already stock.
The Bads: Their customer service is on the ropes. As you have seen by some reviews, they need help with some of the basics with customer service. With no one else to service, I wasn't told to bring a number to my table, and wasn't given a straw for my tea. It is little things that will leave lasting impressions to customers and reviewers alike.
If Wake is able to amp up their customer service, consider more food and seasoning for their menu, then this place will be a 5. For now, they are struggling to do their best, and it shows in a positive way. Hopefully they have everything together by the summer and I can re-evaluate my...
Read moreMy son and I stopped by for breakfast and coffee drinks. We sat at the counter. We were not acknowledged by anyone (there were approximately 6 other customers in the shop). I was finally able to get a server's attention and asked for a menu. She seemed surprised we wanted to order food. We ordered our food and drinks. We ordered Avocado toast with bacon and egg. They were good. Here's when things really went south. I asked her for a check - again, with only a few customers it was impossible to get her attention. She said "okay." Fifteen (15) minutes passed. My son and I looked at each other in utter confusion. We could see our server and another server looking around to see where two coffee drinks were supposed to go - my goodness, only 6 customers, we had our drinks, and most of the others had theirs. Could they not remember, or by process of elimination figure out who to give the drinks to? Look for the table with no beverages! But I digress. I finally was able to get her attention and when I again asked her for the check she said "You have to pay at the register" to which I replied "But I still need a check to see how much I owe". We walked over to the register and I said "Do you remember what we ordered?" and she said "Oh, we're still working out the payment process" to which I replied "That should have been worked out before the place opened". We paid, left, and then wondered how long Wake can stay in business with such poor customer service and staff training. I want to see it succeed as I live in this neighborhood and love the concept. However, the staff does not seem well-trained or invested in the success of...
Read moreI came here to check out their coffee in hopes of buying a bag of espresso roast. Unfortunately, I did not like their coffee. I had an iced latte. I wanted the avocado toast I'd seen online, and when I got there they said the kitchen was closed- I went a little after lunch time. I ordered a bottle of water and coffee on their kiosk, and didn't get the bottle of water at all. When I asked for it they told me they didn't have any so they gave me tap water and refunded the bottle. One good thing was the vibe, it was very open and music was good. If you like their coffee and are looking for somewhere to hang and do work or catch up with a friend it might be fine if you go early. I also saw many people coming in to buy bags of their coffee while I was there. I was surprised it was “top rated” following my experience. However I understand the staffing & item delivery issues right now related to the pandemic which may explain the customer service issues, closing early, and lack of...
