It was probably a week and a half since my visit but I’m usually behind on reviews. So it was my daughter’s first time and we both had shown up pretty late at night, before she had to go to work with me, for my overnight shift. She didn’t know what she wanted and when we were asked over the intercom we asked for a moment. Originally we had talked to a female and then it was a male that came over. They had a steady moving line so we expected they were busy. As we were difficult and sort of slow we knew we left a bit of a gap between ordering out next item. You all have a massive menu and it’s great. Then a female came back to finish our order. Now for someone coming up on their 12th shift in 5 days I caught what was going on. My daughter and I chuckled as we pulled to the window and saw two smiley faces greet us at the window. Found out they were brother and sister and I told them how I worked with my siblings growing up. So many times you go and place an order and get rudeness or someone who seems like they hate their job. These two were trying to make it fun and they did. My daughter asks to go back every time she comes to work with me. These two siblings gave me hope for their generation as they were a little quirky but the line moved steadily and the food was hot and fresh. I talked about this experience with my friends and my daughter talked to her friends about it. Now they want to see if they can come across them. Thank you to the brother and sister who can make the best out of their day and still bring smiles to their customer faces. We...

I ordered online take out. Large jalapeno poppers, steak and quesadilla, tamales, a steak rice bowl with added lettuce and sour cream.

The quesadillas was the worst disappointment I could fathom. It was dry, barely any meat and cheese (mostly tortillas) and no seasoning. I paid $7 for large poppers and received 5 poppers, they were good just not worth it unless I am really craving them. The tamales were the worst I have had. Mostly the corn flour (or whatever breading they use) with a squirt of spicy meat in the middle. Taco bell can do better than them for meat on the quesidellas and tamales. The sour cream and queso was so watery it could be called barely flavored water. The steak bowl was decently large and tasted pretty good.

Overall l am sticking to the bowls. Everything else seems disappointing.

Edit : I had to edit this review as from 4 to one star as that watery sour cream gave me food poisoning. It was the only thing I ate that day that wasn't the same as my bf and he wasn't sick. If you order sour cream and it is watery AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS! I do not recommend this particular place TO ANYONE. I will go to the one in the Des Moines area as that is where my bf got me a delicious steak burrito from. I think we may have to avoid them for a bit too as that was absolutely awful! My bf said he doesn't want to even go there and risk it. If we do at a later date, I will review them separately, but for...

Absolutely terrible customer service. First of all I will start by saying I have been a regular customer at this location and the Des Moines locations. I had ordered a cheese quesadilla (my usual order) and once I got home, found it had beef in it. I went back and kindly stated the issue, which I was then refused a new one. If they make your order wrong or there is a misunderstanding, good luck on getting it remade or your money back even. They treat you like a criminal and are extremely rude about it. There were no apologizes, manners, just rudely "okay..? do you want to buy a cheese quesadilla then because you ordered beef." Which I most definitely didn't because I'm a vegetarian. Apparently I was supposed to tear open my quesadilla and check it while driving through a DRIVE-THRU. He did not even want to give me my money back until I said I would be calling a manager. He handed me the money and didn't say anything or any apologizes just stared at me. I wouldn't recommend going here unless you want to waste money on subpar food and most likely have it made wrong and be treated like crap. Lost a regular customer over some horrible...

So glad that Abelardo's opened a chain in Ames (located at where the Long John Silver's used to be). I can finally get my fix of chorizo and egg burrito for breakfast without having to go all the way down to Des Moines. I have to admit though, the West Des Moines chain still have the best breakfast tacos, but who has the time to drive all the way to WDM on a Saturday morning... Having grown up in Southern California, I can attest to the quality of Abelardo's carne asada fries (it's called "super fries" on the menu). It tastes just like home, except I recommend subbing in the adobada for meat. Given that we're in Iowa, Abelardo's adobada (made from carne/pork) is to die for, and it goes well with anything on their menu (tacos, burritos, super fries/nachos). The other thing that I recommend is their avocado salsa. It's like guacamole, except 10 times better (and spicy too!). The service is friendly, the drive-thru intercom works, and the decor... well, it's typical Mexican fast food/grease grill. Beware of the slow wait time after ordering, they cook everything fresh after ordering.

Told our total was $32.78, came home to find out our card was charged $39.78. Did not leave a tip. Worker gave himself a $7 tip on our mastercard. They also messed up our order. Called to tell them they overcharged us and they proceeded to tell us it was our bank. Checked the bank account and there was no fee from the bank. I asked his name since he took our order so I could speak to the owner the next day about what happened. He hung up the phone and will not answer to our number now. You have to be a down right piece of trash to society to do this. We will not be eating here again. I would not suggest eating at this "establishment". Bunch of thieves.

My first experience with Abelardo's is a "can't wait to come back" winner! The picture menu in the drive through was very helpful and my food looked just like the picture. The tortillas were grilled and strong enough to hold the generous and delicious chicken fajita, which was spicy enough to get my attention but not overwhelming. Most refried beans are a mere afterthought, but not these. Mui bueno!!
