Hostess needs to learn that she is the face of the company, that she is the first impression given. Originally we had been going to Dad's across the street, but there was a line and we looked across the street and saw calico's, no waiting. We found out why. You walk in no one's their to greet you you sign a paper with your name and how many guests if you're going to dine in. As you sit down a young gal comes out and says oh I'll seat you now. Proceeds to turn around talk in a quiet voice, I tell my husband I cannot hear her, so he lets her know that I am unable to hear her so she lowers her voice even further so I can't hear her at all as she's gesturing towards tables close to the bakery or close to the window. She looked us up and down shook her head and said never mind and took us to the table by the window. How rude! I wanted to walk straight out! Decided to give it a chance looking over the menu many of the mills came with an option to sub out fruit for the potatoes but the fisherman's dish that I ordered two eggs ham toast potatoes did not give that option. I asked if I could I was not told there would be an upcharge! $5 upcharge! My husband's quiche said it could be substituted so he did he was not charged $5. Mine did say no potatoes but no charge was taken off for the leaving out the potatoes I was just upcharged $5 to put fruit on my plate. I understand you got to make your money somewhere but you also need to inform your customers that there's up charges. What I got was not worth what I paid. And I guess you're not giving a choice of jam You're just brought out whatever the heck the server wants to bring. Would not ever recommend this place My husband's quiche was salty had lots of pockets of salt the ham I had was full of salt because of the way it was cooked. I wish that I had waited for the line at Dad's maybe they would have been better at this point I don't think anything could have been worse than my experience...
Read moreHaving had the pleasure to embark on a culinary journey at Calico Cupboard, it's a given that the establishment serves up some pretty satisfactory dishes that marry flavor and finesse. This eatery is ensconced in a pristine ambiance, noticeably immaculate, which is always a good precursor to a delectable meal.
The first thing that strikes you about Calico Cupboard is its unadulterated dedication to quality food. Each dish feels like a thoughtful orchestra of ingredients, singing in harmonious flavors, making the experience pleasing to the palate. While the pricing teeters slightly towards the higher end, gastronomes will find the culinary delights well worth the dent in the wallet. The food quality and taste undoubtedly justify the price tag.
However, the ambiance, while clean and well-maintained, lacked a certain coziness that some of its local counterparts seem to envelop you in. It’s that intangible warmth and inviting embrace that were amiss, making the dining experience feel a tad bit impersonal. Nevertheless, this didn’t overshadow the gustatory delights that unfolded on the plate.
One of the inherent challenges of dining at this gastronomic haven is the inevitable wait. Patience is indeed a virtue at Calico Cupboard. But, it is a small price to pay for the ensuing culinary dance that enlivens your taste buds. However, with the plethora of dining options surrounding the eatery, the wait could deter the more impatient souls amongst us.
All in all, Calico Cupboard is a delightful spot that promises good, clean, and tasty food. The ambiance, albeit lacking in warmth, is polished and immaculate. The price point, while slightly elevated, aligns well with the quality on offer. The wait may be a bit taxing, but the resulting flavorful concoctions are more than...
Read moreWe have been coming back to the Calico Cupboard in Anacortes since before 2010. We come 3 or more times a year from our home in Vancouver as we enjoy Anacortes and the San Juans so very much. Calico Cupboard has always been a welcoming, homey place to stop for coffee, tea, breakfast and/or brunch. In recent years we always have enjoyed the Breakfast Burrito because it is such a satisfying meal staying with you all day! Following the worst of the Pandemic it was rewarding to find the Calico Cupboard still operating with few changes to their menu. We were, however, concerned with the possibility of any change(s) to their Staff and Personnel. Lack of proper ambience and atmosphere created by Staff can spoil the finest of meals - as cheer and joy are removed from one’s experience. When we last dined at Calico Anacortes three months ago, we thought that the pandemic’s effect on hiring staff was becoming manifest as we were met and served by an indifferent and careless wait staff. Should we return, we wondered? We thought on our latest visit yesterday, that we would check out if this deterioration of ambience was continuing -as we hoped not, because we enjoy the food there so much. Fortunately for us, as usual yesterday, our food was terrific and, happily we were welcomed by a lovely hostess who we think had been there on previous visits and, finally we were served by an absolutely brilliant, mature and caring Wait Person (Gina) who, in our opinion is perhaps the finest and sharpest in her position within the hospitality industry that we’ve had the good pleasure of encountering. Her Service alone would encourage us to return to the Anacortes Calico Cafe. The food here we enjoy immensely and Gina makes it that much more appealing of...
