Read moreI recently visited Seva for the first time, and after reading the reviews here I have to conclude that either I or the people of this fine town have been smoking entirely the wrong sort of crack.
We had the vegan bruschetta. The almond cheese was dry, the tapenade nothing more than a pâté of kalamata. The bruschetta tomatoes were watery, leaving an undesirable sort of salty broth after the few solid chunks had been spooned onto the (admittedly decent) garlic bread.
As for the shishito peppers, where to begin? It feels a crime to bestow lively words on such an lifeless dish. The peppers themselves were far past the point of maturity, about five inches long at the smallest. At their advanced age, I suppose that drowning them in vegetable oil was a sort of merciful euthanasia. If calculating the value of a meal by sheer caloric density, these are certainly a winner. Less blistered than burnt, these geriatric capsicums left me questioning every other time I have enjoyed this dish, and are thus awarded negative stars.
The vegan caesar salad somehow manages to miss the entire point of the dish. In what is a relatively simple dish, consisting of romaine, croutons, protein, and shaved cheese, the main flavor must come from the dressing itself; ideally, a balanced blend of savory umami, unctuous richness, and a hint of sharp acidity. Someone evidently decided that salt is a no-go, since the salad essentially tasted like a head of romaine drenched in lemon juice. The vegan parmesan was somehow dry and chalky despite the deluge of acid which overwhelmed the palate. The croutons served as a crunchy lacuna amidst a sea of lemony despair. The tempeh was similarly free of sensation or pleasure. Again, I award this dish negative stars for tainting the concept of Caesar salads in general.
I had other dishes, but I my word allotment depletes more rapidly than my vitriol. To be brief (for once), the thus unmentioned offenders were the vegan mac and the gazpacho, both of which suffered a similar calamity; a light hand on the immersion blender. No one expects a chunky texture to their mac and cheese, and yet the dish displayed a flamboyant array of beiges and oranges, a disparate mixture of half-cooked cashews and squash chunks. Despite this, the pasta had been boiled to a state of flaccid homogeneity; the texture came solely from the (again, horrifically lemony) “sauce”. The gazpacho more closely resembled a thin pico de gallo. If I could muster more words here, trust me reader, I would.
The garlic bread was flavorful and not over-done, and the cocktails did in fact contain alcohol. For those points alone, and those alone, I award a...
Read moreFirst I want to say I do not leave a lot of reviews. Only when it is necessary. My sister and I have been customers of Seva for 30 plus years. We have stuck with them with the big move to the Westside and with the extreme price increases post covid. My sister (used to live in A2) was back visiting from UT and she really wanted to get takeout. So we call in our order for 3 people. The amount was 100.44. The employee on the phone says we are required to pay a $18.95 service fee since our bill is over $100. We said no we do not want to pay that. He says since its just over $100 he will waive it. I thank him and we drive across town to pick up our food. We get there and he tells me he has to charge me the fee. I say no, you said you would remove it. I gave you my phone number, you could have called me to tell me before I drove over here. He said sorry but I have to charge you. I was going to walk away without the food but my sister was starving so we took the food and paid the fee. In my opinion (and my sister who was paying for the meal) it is a ridiculous policy to charge more because we are spending more. But they have freedom to have that policy. But they never should have told me they would take it off and then refuse to when I showed up. Especially when they had my number and could call me. Also I wouldn't be paying over $100 for 3 small portioned dinners if they hadn't raised their prices so dramatically. My sister and I will never return to this establishment and I am not surprised there were only 3 tables sat on a Saturday night when we were there for our take out. And btw the food...
