Tldr: Be wary of you struggle with abrasive personality types. At an event a singular rude staff member kicked out my partner and a man in crutches trying to learn how to play magic despite there being room for them to watch. I will start by saying the shop itself looks quite nice, I've found multiple cards here that other shops did not have, and they were very generous with handing out prizes. However I recently attended a pre-release mtg event with my wife. She is interested in magic, but does not know the rules or feel comfortable enough to spend $42 on a set and play by herself with strangers. about 10mins before the event started a blond, male employee came into the back area the event was taking place and quite aggressively and without warning told my partner and another gentleman (similarlt new) who was brought by his friend that if they weren't paying event participants they had to leave immediately as they were not allowed to use the seats. Mind you 1: there were extra places to sit for them, and 2: the other gentleman was literally in crutches. We pointed this out to him and explained the situation, but he refused to listen. Being very upset by the interaction, and being very, very non-confrontational she left the store for a cafe across the street. The same employee then proceeded to yell at participants in at a frankly unreasonable volume given the small size of the room to sign in to the event. Normally that type of behavior is something I brush off, but given how "inclusive" the store presents itself that type of boorish behavior is not at all considerate of a more introverted or Nero divergent population, to a point regardless of my personal feelings I would recommend those of that nature look elsewhere for game events. Ultimately I went 1-1 and left quickly. The whole ordeal has left a very sour taste in my mouth and I am unlikely to ever purchase products or attend events at...
Read moreJust played my first MTG prerelease ever at this store and let me tell you something, this place is top notch. I live in an area where we have a ton of local WPN shops, so deciding to take a 30 minute drive out to Sylvan Factory seemed a little unnecessary, but man am I happy I did. The store is super open and clean, lots of in-stock product, a large amount of singles available, and even a bunch of stuff outside of just TCGs. The play space was by far the best I've ever seen, almost all the furniture and lighting looked custom made for the store, there was wall space to show off local artists and lots of space for all the players. The staff was amazing, everyone was super kind and eager to help players with anything they needed. The event itself was a great blend of professionally planned/handled while also still maintaining the casual feeling that allows players to have fun. Lastly I want to give a special shoutout to the owner, I've had the chance to meet and observe a handful of shop owners since first starting my adventure into MTG, Todd is easily one of the best. I constantly saw him on his feet going around ensuring people were having fun, and checking if they needed help. I can tell that everyone here, both staff and community, is passionate about the games they play and the what they do. Thank you Sylvan Factory for the experience, and I'll see y'all...
Read moreBelieve the hype! Sylvan Factory is an amazing gaming space for everyone. Competitive prices on sealed card games, lots of good magic singles in stock, tons of board games, cosplay gear, stuffed animals, gaming supplies, minis (d&d, warhammer, etc.) and nerdy knickknacks of all kinds! Not to mention the store is gorgeous.
Staff was very friendly. Shop is immaculately clean with plenty of space for all kinds of gaming. Spotless restrooms. Sylvan Factory even has a windowed, closed off space for classes and RPGs. Drinks and snacks were available in store, but plenty of food options nearby.
Drove over from Kalamazoo to play Friday Night Magic and 2 Headed Giant on Saturday with a friend of mine (7/8, 7/9/2022). We had a blast! Store owner ran the events himself, was encouraging, welcoming and promoting of a fun and inclusive environment for everyone. Multiple events were going on both days so give them a ring, check their FB or webpage to see what is going on at the shop. Can't wait for the next time I can make it over to Ann Arbor to visit Sylvan Factory and sling...
