We got to our hotel at 10:45 and needed something to eat as we had been traveling all day. Capital Doner in Arlington was the only thing close to us that was open this late, so we went. We walked in 7 minutes to close. We had no idea what we were getting for food besides that it was just something that wasn’t gas station food.
Oh. My. Goodness! It was the BEST thing we could have done. Not only was the food absolutely amazing and we got to try a new cuisine! The food was delicious, so much so I almost cried. The beef was tender and sliced amazing, the sauce that was served with the meat was delicious and had no spice (thank goodness!) and the pita it was layered on top of?! DIVINE. There was a side of yogurt that came with it and I was skeptical at first (thank you Midwest tastebuds), but the yogurt elevated the entire meal to a whole new level.
It was by pure chance we got to be there on opening night. The owner(s) were there and were gracious enough to let us stay and eat even after it was closing time. They were both kind, helpful, and held conversation with two very cranky and hangry travelers. We will be back again before we leave the...
Read moreThis is my second time at Capital Doner and each visit is better than the last. Having had doner in many different countries, including in Türkiye, Australia, New Zealand, and Germany, I was excited that we were finally getting some doner in northern Virginia, as it is so hard to find good doner.
Today I had a mixed doner on rice with a salty Turkish yoghurt drink named ayran (which is perfectly paired with meats. The mixed doner was made up of beef and lamb in addition to chicken.
The doner was nice and hot, not greasy, and full of flavor. The vegetables that came with it were fresh and it was an excellent medley of deliciousness.
The serving size was also good. The staff were knowledgeable about the menu and exhibited the type of hospitality that the Turks are known around the world for.
After finishing my meal I had some Turkish tea with pistachio baklava, a perfect end to the meal.
I hope more people go to Capital Doner and experience authentic doner as it is very popular in...
Read moreI was really excited to try this place because I'd heard that the DC Capital Doner was the best Doner kebab in the area, though I'd never managed to go try it. The food was indeed very good -- the doner meat was even exceptional, and probably the best I'd ever had in the DC area. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that the price is very high considering how much food. There are lots of great places around the area, and $15-20 for a sandwich or entree isn't out of the ordinary... but a $20 entree from, say, Courthouse Kabob, or TNR Cafe, will easily be enough food for two meals -- just a big, heaping portion. Here, it was barely enough for one meal. Also, another very minor negative were the french fries -- average fries at best, and not very many, for $7, is one of the worst french fry deals around. I still recommend it because I love doner meat so much, but I won't be coming nearly as often as I would otherwise if the portion sizes were comparable to other nearby...
