Read moreConveniently placed and beautifully decorated, this coffee shop used to be a favorite of mine. It's got a fun changing menu. For example they had fun cherry blossom inspired drinks for March, and now for June they have hibiscus teas and minty refreshing mochas. Their baked goods are baked locally but unfortunately they cannot heat them up for you behind the counter if you're someone who needs their croissants and muffins warm. The drinks, atmosphere, food were delightful and welcoming. But by far the best part of compass coffee: The Baristas!
Unfortunately recently they haven't been as impressive. Not sure what inspired the change but many beloved baristas no longer operate this location and the newer staff, though qualified, are not as friendly. Additionally, prices have changed. I ordered a small latte and was charged $7 for it compared to my usual $5. It's possible they mischarged me as the staff is newer but when I asked the barista to ring it up again, it was still $7.
Overall, I would say their coffee is still good despite the lack of love in it, but not worth the possible increased price. The feeling inside is a bit colder than before the staff change, so maybe a place to work from home, but not to meet up with a friend. I would give it one star now but I'm giving it two for the good times we used to have.
EDIT: I have given compass another shot, and am changing my 2/5 to a 4/5. Today they had a man with a black shirt and afro on the bar (didn't catch his name but he was working around 2pm today), and this man can really make a drink. Both me and my friend were shocked with how well our drinks were made. Unfortunately there was quite a bit of foam in hers, making the quantity of the drink lesser than the full cup (about 1/4 missing) but the quality more than made up for that. Also as a side note the girl who always wears braids with red hair is really friendly and adds great vibes to the...
Read moreAlthough I am not returning to buy coffee here, I wish to state that Compass coffee was a great part of my daily ritual. I loved to grab cappuccino and pastries at the end of my puppy dog walk. My trips to the coffee shop cost in average $18, which is a luxury that I can splurge for the pure pleasure of having a good start of my day and gift others. Although it seems to be a nice place to stay and enjoy, I would grab and go and sometimes I would walk in with my puppy. I always thought it was amazing to have such a welcoming coffee shop that offered bowls of dog cookies. One more reason to to continue supporting the business. But it was a misconception of mine.
Until a week ago when, what I assume would be the shop manager, told me to keep out if it is a non service dog and, that I shouldn’t be worried as they would yell loud enough so o could hear from the sidewalk. I was struck with confusion as I had seen people walking in dogs several times and, I was shocked for the tone she used.
Later I figured out that the dog cookies were obviously for the service dogs! Even though door signs are absent, but I guess that’s what she meant. I am sure that is the way she addresses customers that walk-in their non service dogs.
Compass served me well for several months and the folks working there are very nice. The tall bearded fellow is very skilled in manipulating the micro foam for artsy cappuccinos, it is a nibble that made coffee experience more enticing.
Union Kitchen is now my next best. It is a hidden treasure for signature coffees and their rules are clearly stated on the door. Bowls of water are outside and, the hooks on the wall indicates exactly what is expected. They also sell compass coffee there.
It is not just coffee, but a great morning experience that gives a great spin start of the day. Enjoy it! Regardless where...
