El Rey Restaurant in Ballston is a hidden culinary gem that captures the essence of authentic cuisine with a modern twist. Nestled in a cozy corner.this restaurant offers a delightful ambiance perfect for both casual dining and special occasions. The menu boasts a diverse selection of dishes that are not only visually appealing but also bursting with flavors that tantalize the taste buds. From traditional favorites like their signature tacos to innovative dishes that showcase local ingredients, each bite at El Rey Restaurant tells a story of passion and creativity. The service here is impeccable, with attentive staff who are knowledgeable about the menu and eager to ensure a memorable dining experience. The ambiance strikes a balance between relaxed and upscale, making it ideal for families, couples, and friends alike. Whether you're a local resident or just passing through Balstone,El Rey Restaurant is a must-visit destination for anyone who appreciates exceptional food in a welcoming atmosphere. I highly recommend trying their [Birria ].

Good location, a bit hidden behind the main drag of Wilson Blvd. service was great, food and drinks were delivered quick. What got me was the portion sizes for margaritas, $12-13 and it was in a rocks glass, FILLED with ice. They definitely are robbing you. My gf ordered a traditional twills margarita and she liked it, I went for the more expensive Mezcal margarita. That thing tasted like an oak barrel. I’m pretty positive they infused liquid oak or something in it. I know my tequila and mezcal and this drink was not drinkable. The tacos were just ok or meh, nothing special and seemed to be lacking flavor. I wouldn’t return unless it was the only option. There are NO excuses for this place to not be stellar in every single area of the business. Too much competition to be mediocre. Disappointed.

Even though I've lived right by El Rey since it opened, never got the chance to go until now. Having lived in Monterey, CA before, I can say I've had some great burritos. The carne asada burrito I had from El Rey ranks as the best one I've had in three years living in Ballston and is easily comparable to California. Great ratio of cheese, steak, beans, and rice while not trying to be too fancy. Price point very good for the area as well. We also ordered the chips and pico, also highly recommend both - they were obviously made in house, super fresh, and flavorful. Decor is fun and I like the open layout with plenty of seating. Service also top notch, friendly and not intrusive. Overall a strong recommend, great place!

I had a disappointing experience at El Ray VA recently. Despite being the only guest at the bar, the bartender's ( Hispanic guy with grey sweater ) demeanor was unwelcoming and rude. He Slammed my drink on the bar, didn’t offer nachos nor ask if we wanted food. Again, we were his only guest at the bar and place was not busy. He had a very mean/irritated facial expression and looked pissed. Although it's possible he was having a bad day, his lack of greeting and dismissive attitude made it difficult to enjoy the beautiful day in Arlington, VA. I informed the manager about the situation, but their response was somewhat nonchalant. After the slamming of the drink, that was the last straw and we left. He had very negative energy. Sadly, I won't be returning to El Ray VA. Life is too short to tolerate such...
