As a person living in Seattle, and formerly Berkeley, I've had plenty of great opportunities to enjoy good Thai food.
But when I come to Ashland, Sawaddee is up there among my favorite places to visit. Not only is the food wonderful, but the service is friendly and wholesome. The owner tends tables herself, much of the staff is family.
Sitting at a table in her restaurant, the experience is more like visiting a friend whose family is cooking, and serving you as a guest. I appreciate great service at a fancy restaurant, but this is just more ... wholesome? somehow.
Anyway, back to the food - it's amazing. Don't be scared of having sushi in a Thai restaurant, or Thai food in a sushi restaurant. Both are excellent.
My particular favorite appetizers are the Tom Kha soup, and the pork satay. For a main, everything I've had over several visits has been amazing - order what looks good to you, it WILL be good.
One warning - if you're used to ordering spicy food, the spice level here has been backed down a notch. If you normally order medium hot in SF, ask for spicy hot here. And if you learned to eat hot food in Thailand or India (etc), let the staff know so they'll jazz...
Read moreI ordered the Mongolian beef (came with small box of rice that’s not pictured) and the Pad See Ew, on the bottom row was the Volcano roll and Sawaddee Ohana Roll. To start, the Mongolian beef was tender with lots of flavor! My boyfriend can be a picky eater but he loved this. I ordered the Pad See Ew and it was amazing, lots of flavor and the portions for these noodles were insane! I can’t wait to have the rest for lunch tomorrow. As for the sushi, you won’t be disappointed! The portions are huge and worth your money. The volcano roll was perfect and the Sawaddee Ohana roll was our favorite! The sizes are huge I could barely fit one into my mouth but I mean that in the best way because it really is worth your money. I wasn’t sure what to expect on the sushi but it was by far our favorite compared to Umami down town. I’m so excited to see more restaurants showing up on the other side of town. Was not disappointed and will be coming back soon 😊 Hopefully they do DoorDash...

Went for my sisters 21st birthday and was surprised! I got a sushi roll and have to admit, it was the best sushi roll i’ve had in this valley. The ingredients were fresh and high quality. My family got several dishes including teriyaki chicken that came with rice and veggie, drunken noodle, pad kra poa (don’t come at me for the spelling), and an indonesian noodle dish. Every dish had unique flavor and we didn’t end up leaving bloated and overly full, so i’m guessing no MSG. They surprised my sister with coconut fried bananas for the whole family for free! 🍌
The son sat us nd gave us amazing service, the father cooked the food, and the mother was a waitress. She had the best humor and joked with us the whole time! I felt very much at home....
