This location is truly a labor of love, and for this reason, I really enjoyed this spot. Within the walls of this building is a ceramics workshop (the main studios for Munktiki, and where mug magic happens). There is a gift shop/museum on-site, where you view and enjoy the mug history of Munktiki. There are amazing original paintings lining the walls, and both mugs and paintings are available for purchase. Artists are on-site at times, so you can talk to the creative minds behind the magic! In the basement lies the mugshop, where original pieces are at times produced for the bar. Next to the museum/giftshop is the bar, 'Dead Man's Isle.' The bar is decorated with some original pieces and beautifully lit! There is a beautiful seating area upstairs, where you can view the main bar from above. Drinks are served with care in hopes of satisfying your desires, and they're delicious. There are food items (munchies) offered, which pair well with the drinks and provide soakage. Items are available for purchase in the bar. Should you want a little momento from your experience. This is a family business, thus, why it's a labor of love! It's a really cool spot in a really awesome area (Astoria). The business was started by dad and is now in the hands of the son. It's just an awesome story, thus an awesome location. They are currently working on a speakeasy, within the main bar, looking forward to that!!! Should you happen to find yourself in the area, definitely stop by, enjoy an awesome family history, overall awesome people, good drink, and a cool location!

Some people have complained about the main door remaining open. Yes, it may interfere with the escapism, but it provides ventilation, as it is an older building. In time, this will be resolved. This is minor, and the rest of the awesomeness...

I cannot get enough of this place! No seriously, I went 3 times in a week. Granted, one of those times was because I left my purse there and had to drive 3 hours from Seattle to get it, BUT it made for another lovely excuse to try more of their amazing cocktails and enjoy the fun atmosphere they have! Also I cannot speak highly enough of their staff, especially Jamie! He made sure my purse was safe, was so exceptionally kind and funny, and was also very patient with me while I picked out tiki mugs to buy. He even gave my husband and I a couple free t-shirts after our long drive back to pick up my purse, which was a sweet way to take the edge off of 6hrs of driving in one day.

Also, a few notes if you’re a tiki bar fan like my husband and I: this is a high quality tiki bar owned by a well-known tiki mug artist, and it’s very clear their art extends far beyond mugs. The bar itself is so beautifully detailed, with unique local flare and some fun shoutouts to The Goonies, and the drinks are exceptional in quality and presentation. Their food menu is also very tasty, we really loved the Togarashi Tots!

Next time you’re in Astoria, don’t miss this hidden gem! Or the chance...

Wife mentioned a co-worker said this was a cool place so we decided to visit after work on Saturday 07/27/2024. We live in Astoria but hadn’t visited this place together. Arrived at approximately 7:45-8:00 pm. Sign inside said please wait to be seated. We were promptly greeted and asked where we would like to sit. We choose a couple seats at the end of the bar. We were escorted to the bar to our seats and provided with menu’s, she even explained that they are difficult to read in the lighting and showed us how to put a napkin under the menu to make reading easier. We were served water within a minute. That was the last time anyone spoke to us. No one , and there were three women serving behind the bar, asked if we were ready to order, if we had questions, if it was our first visit, nothing. All three women were not busy. One woman was actually doing nothing. We “patiently” waited at least 15 minutes after setting our menus down on the bar expecting someone to take our order or speak to us. No one did so I told my wife I’m done, let’s go and we left. Not a good experience at all is the...

Our experience at Dead Man’s Isle was outstanding! Jamie and Toni went above and beyond, giving us the best tiki bar experience. DMI ranks at the top of our tiki bar rankings, we’ve been to quite a few and this one stands out. Toni made drinks that are artfully concocted and displayed mainly in Tiki mugs. After only a few minutes, Jamie suggested cocktails for us and he was right on. He worked the room like a showman and brought us up to speed on the history of the bar, the owner and the mugs he creates, the building, the artwork, the town and the mugs. We would go back just to talk to him. DMI is spread out, with 20+ ft ceilings meticulously decorated, not at all cramped. The music wasn’t Island, but a funky mix that everyone could enjoy. Jamie suggested we try the sweet potato fries and they were hands down, the best we ever had. A lot of bars have been out of merchandise lately, but Dead Man’s Isle has quite the selection, from mugs, glassware, shirts and swizzle sticks, they even have a vending machine for small Tiki mugs.
