There are a lot of amazing beer and food places in Atlanta, especially the closer you get into town. The entire Little 5 Points area is riddled with awesome places to eat and drink and after being in this city the past 32 of my 37 years, The Porter is my favorite Lil 5 spot. The place is like a TARDIS; much bigger on the inside. There are so many things to love about this place that I don't know where to start, but as an avid beer aficionado, I'll start there. Navigating the drink menu can be a bit overwhelming at first, even for an experienced drinker as myself. The selection of what's on tap is staggeringly massive, but fret not. The beer selection may be astoundingly huge, but the staff, or even locals around you, are more than willing to assist you in your selection. Now that beer and drinks are done, let's talk about decor. It's simple, rustic, and homey, like I'm hanging at a friend's cabin while nature plays outside. The food, oh dear the food. You can't go wrong with anything you order off the menu, but my favorite is the Belgian fries. I heard way back when that they were cooked in duck fat (don't know the veracity of that claim), but they are exquisite nonetheless. Besides that, everything I've ever eaten there has been delicious. All in all, this is my favorite place in Lil 5. Vortex may have killer burgers, Savage has the best pizza in the city besides Fellini's, and Front Page News has awesome food as well as Bloody Marys, but The Porter is the best all around eatery/drinkers destination in the area if...
Read moreI have been going to The Porter for at least a decade and is a real treasure. I travel a lot for work and pleasure and I'm really into beer, so I have been to bars and breweries in 50+ US cities and at least 30 countries, and The Porter is without a doubt the best beer bar I have ever been to. I am delighted that it is in my home city and I can go whenever I want. The cellar is magnificent of course, but the draft selection is also amazing. I know for a fact that any time I drop in there will be more than a few things that I have never tried before as well as old favorites, and I know that every one will have been stored and transported well, and will be poured perfectly through clean draft lines and that what I drink will be the brewer's intended experience. Whether it's Czech beers from a side-pull faucet, hard-to-find-in-bottles-much-less-on-draft Scandinavian offerings, or something from a more obscure German or Belgian brewery, I have often been transported back to those places in a way that no other bar has managed. If I see an offering from a country that I haven't been to or whose beer scene I am not familiar with I know that what The Porter is serving will be an excellent introduction. And as if that weren't enough The Porter regularly offers collaborations with amazing breweries such as Verzet, 8 Wired, Burial, Crooked Stave, Allagash, and many more, which is a testament to their status as a...
Read moreExcellent choice despite appearance! It was my first trip into Little Five Points and I found myself looking for a place to sit, have a beer, and perhaps something to eat. I am glad I landed at The Porter Beer Bar. They have an extensive list of craft brews with detailed descriptions and, what I really appreciated, a breakout of reach style of beer. It was very lively on a late Saturday afternoon and soon became packed with many people waiting for tables and a place at the bar. Despite that, service was fast and, for the most part, very knowledgeable (there was a new bartender who wasn't quite as confident as the others.) The ambiance is a noisy pub that has been around for a long while with the worn appearance that comes along with that history. What the menu lacked in depth seemed to make up for in creativity. I was seated at the bar and am unsure if there is a different menu for tables area. I decided on the herb seasoned french fries that come with charred mayo. It was large portion and very tasty; a nice change from typical fries. I did notice a framed document announcing that The Porter Beer Bar was a semi-finalist for a James Beard award which was quite impressive to me. I'll definitely return to for a sit down dinner. One tip: it does get extremely busy so arriving early is a recommendation. I am unsure if they take...
