Disclaimer: First Timer. First Impressions- Give you the scoop so you won't look so new-time-y
I did prior research, noting that I was free during the week and wanted to try a new spot. When I read that karaoke comes on Wednesday nights, I decide to try Star Bar. Firstly, I enjoyed the ease of parking. In a high congested area, I feel less stressed knowing I will have a place to park. The parking lot is on an decline and wraps around the back. There is an entrance near the back. I entered through there but truly, you're supposed to enter at the front on Moreland Ave. I didn't know at the time because there is no signage stating otherwise. Upon entering, it gives the appeal of a grungy dive bar, which is cool with me because I enjoy the old hard rock. There's a bar on the lower level where I believe the regulars go, because the bartender was fully engaged in conversation and didn't acknowledge me. I didn't care because I was more focused on trying to see where the karaoke was and to try and get comfortable.
I played one play of Pinball, which they have 4 machines. It's actually a great addition because it cost a quarter and it's loud. There is seating in 'the cut' near the pinball machines. They had a projector with an eccentric movie playing. Also on the bottom level there's a bathroom for all genders to use, I enjoyed that they have even THAT so. It was clean.
I approached the bartender and let her know it was my first here. It got kind of awkward because apparently I wasn't supposed to enter through the back door ..She was very chill and told me if I wanted karaoke it's upstairs and I may have to visit the security guard to check for ID. She checked anyway but I guess the upstairs staff needed to know too.. I was fine with that. Going upstairs, they had another bar and seating, more open. No games. The bartenders were very attentive. The karaoke was slowly steady. It wasn't extremely live like another spot I went to during the weekday, but it was enough.
I enjoyed a Deep Eddys vodka Grapefruit (don't particularly like grapefruit, wish they had Lemon), and two wells vodka. 20 dollar total. Not bad for the area. No food that I know of. I ate prior.
Overall, I would come back with some friends for Karaoke Wednesdays or to play some pinball with a few drinks. I like how I had a few places to hide since it was during the week and not crowded at all. I'm sure it could get crowded on days where they is live music.
Thank you for not...
Read more"Eh" - my sister, my hubby, and I visited in Oct 2017 (hubby and I down from PA for a week). Lucky us, because it so happened to be the night before an annual Bluegrass festival in the Atlanta area. There were some really GREAT Bluegrass bands on stage, and these boys were gittin'' DOWN!!! with their banjos, fiddles, harmonica, etc. Thank God they were there, or we'd probably have taken a look inside the place and walked back out (it was around 9 pm and the place was pretty dead).
I wanted a Heineken beer, but they were out. Ok, how about a Yuengling? Nope - out. Sheesh! I think I settled for a lousy Bud draft. Typical neighborhood bar, it seemed. There were some shady and/or weird characters, it was pretty dark inside, and had that lingering "spilled beer" odor. Smoking permitted. Did I tell you that we made our own fun and that the bands rocked?! Woo hoo!!!...
