Cow & Cod — Restaurant in Auburn

My husband and I just started trying this herfy's. They told us it was the original herfy's and that their food was the best. When we first tried the food it was good even if the counter staff was cold. We are the kind of people that spend money at our favorite eateries and we tip the staff for their hard work. We have noticed the counter staff is very stiff and cold to us. On severals occasions we have gotten our food home and realized that we didn't get the sauce that was suppose to come with the meal. Tonight when my husband brought the food home we once again realized we didn't get the sauce that should have come with the tots, if my husband hadn't bought extra sauce we wouldn't have had any. While the food at earlier visits had been good tonight was NOT good. I didn't finish my food because the burger didn't taste right it tasted funny and it was drowning in sauce that made the bun soggy. It was gross. I know we will not be rushing back to spend our money at this Herfy's. I would rather spend my money where I didn't feel that we were being treated rudely by the counter staff and the food is more consistent. I also had wondered if the counter staff had a problem with the fact that my husband and I are a mixed couple. We have been friendly to all of the staff when we went in and thank them for helping us and each time the counter staff acted stiff and cold with us. My husband and I didn't really compare our feelings about our experiences until tonight. We wanted to also say that their is one gentleman behind the counter line that is always friendly, that is the main reason we continued to go as much as we did because the gentleman behind the grill line was nice. Come in for the fries, stay for the burger.

I don't normally post reviews about fries but they were seriously that good. Maybe because I came during the lunch rush; but the fries were so hot and crispy I couldn't help but wonder what their secret was... piping hot, and crispy -- without being hard or burnt like the other guys. Oh and the "large" is seriously a very healthy size when you compare it to the small portions at other places... Great value.

Now for the burger. I went straight for the Double Cheeseburger, as is, and honestly it was like a cross between a big mac and a Double Cheeseburger, except it tasted more like real ingredients; on what was definitely a toasted bun. And you don't get that gross over-salty feeling like McDonald's gives you about 2/3 of the way through your food.

The staff seemed warm and personable and you could tell they were actually trying to provide a great dining experience for their customers and from what I could see, they were running a tidy/efficient operation beyond the scenes too.

I haven't tried their fish yet, but honestly, they got the fries and burgers down so perfect I'm genuinely going to come back again for that next.

Ps. it was a little over 8 bucks for the Double Cheeseburger and jumbo fries. Worth it.

Sadly my family of four got our usual - 1/3 bacon cheeses with curly fries and milkshakes. Everything besides the milkshakes was unusual. The curly fries have changed for the worse. They are not crispy even was cold in places like they were even fried and had no flavor, didn’t even taste like it had salt on it. The burger looked good but somehow the burger besides the bacon had absolutely no flavor. Couldn’t even taste the cheese.

The milkshakes were still amazing and delicious. I think they have the best milkshakes in the area. Sadly, with everything else, I suspect that they are using inferior products that the original Herfys used.

I always like supporting local, long standing, small businesses but with the amount we spent and the quality of food we got I sadly will not be going to Cow and Cod any longer. This is the second time the quality and our order has been inferior. I even called to let them know and the lady, Jessica on the phone was incredibly rude. My husband has been going to Herfys since he was a child and we have been bringing our kids since they were old enough to have a burger. Sadly, I do not recommend this business and will not be going there again due to their sub par food and sub par...
