We decided to give Baguette House a try because I wanted to see what the bánh mì in Austin was like. Well, to say the least, I was a bit disappointed.
We ordered the House Special Combination Baguette, House Combination Baguette, BBQ Pork Baguette, Meatball Baguette, Pork Steam Bun, and Avocado Smoothies.
To give a little background about myself: I absolutely love bánh mì and have tried a variety of them, from different places -- Vietnam; Dong Phuong Bakery in New Orleans, LA; Quoc Bao in Garland, TX; and a couple of others in California.
There was nothing really special about the bánh mì at Baguette House. The House Special Combination, House Combination Baguette, and Meatball Baguette were fairly underwhelming. I wish it had more flavor. The BBQ Pork Baguette was the best bánh mì out of all that we ordered. All of the bread was also fairly crispy.
The Pork Steam Bun was not good at all, and I'd go as far as to say that it wasn't worth it. It tasted old and soggy, though the staff heated it for me right then and there. I will say that the Pork Steam Bun is fairly cheap in comparison to other bakeries, though.
The Avocado Smoothie was also not something worth getting. We couldn't taste the Avocado flavor, but we definitely tasted a flavor of vanilla ice cream. Powder or not, it didn't taste or resemble an Avocado Smoothie.
Moving on to the customer service — although the staff member assisted me with my order, I felt like I was unwanted. I walked in, and because it was my first time, I asked her if she could wait a moment. I immediately saw an eye roll — that should have warranted us to leave, but because we were already there, might as well try out the food. As I proceed to place my order with her, she seemed very uninterested and kept looking at my friends and not me, though I was the one placing the order. There was no one else there except for us, so it's not like something was too interesting that she couldn't even be bothered with.
Baguette House was a place I really wanted to visit because I wanted to try Vietnamese food in Austin. Little did I know it was a disappointment. If you visit Baguette House and would like to try a bánh mì, I'd recommend the BBQ Pork Baguette since it was the best I've tried. I also wanted to try the Pate So, but they ran out by the time I came. The big reason for the rating is due to the customer service and then the food. No one wants to walk inside a business and feel unwelcome, but that's exactly how I felt, whether I spoke English/Vietnamese to the staff member who took the order. The bánh mì, for what you get: quality and amount, is fairly expensive. I've been to better places, with cheaper bánh mì and discounts (i.e. Buy 3...
Read moreWent here today for the first time as I was looking for a place semi-near work that I could grab a quick banh mi for my late lunch (I usually have lunch around 4:30-5pm) and the reviews sold me.
It is located in the Chinatown Center off North Lamar and it is usually a battle to navigate anywhere in this plaza (I don't know why, but there are always little traffic jams strewn throughout so I usually have to add 5mins just in entry/exit times here!), but I went in off Ferguson and it is right at the turn in to the plaza, so if you can take the "back way" do, it will save you time and frustration!
It is very nice and contemporary inside and their menu is pretty straight forward. They have a lot to choose from, but as I was in a time crunch and I was a woman on a banh mi mission, I didn't really peruse all their offerings. I got the chicken banh mi sans jalapeños and a thai tea w/tapioca (there is a $0.50 upcharge for the tapioca pearls).
The chicken banh mi was good, but I don't feel like it lived up to all the hype I'd read in other reviews and based on other banh mi I have had in the area. It is on a very narrow baguette and the bread was a little harder than I would have liked. Also, because the baguette is long and skinny, I didn't feel like there was a lot of meat or veggies and the mayo was definitely on the very minimal side. It was ok flavor, but again, I have had better (and bigger). $3.85 is an ok price for what you get, but I didn't feel it was the uber bargain raved about in others' reviews.
As for the Thai Tea w/tapioca, this was very good and I liked having the option to add the tapioca pearls. My only gripe here would be waaaaay too much ice for the $4 ($3.50+$.50 for the tapioca) I paid for the size of the drink.
The staff was very nice and though a little hard to understand, I was able to get exactly what I ordered.
All in all, glad I gave them a try, but I think I will explore some other banh mi options...
