I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the experience my family and I had at your restaurant on the evening of December 18, 2024. We came to Betos for a last-minute birthday celebration, as it was conveniently located near my mom’s place and we were hungry. Our group consisted of 8 people, including my husband and myself, and we encountered several issues during our visit.
Upon arrival, we were surprised to be asked to wait 20 minutes for a table, even though the restaurant appeared mostly empty with only about three tables occupied. Once seated, we were placed in a back corner despite many other open tables. When we requested to be moved to a different area, the staff refused, and it took an additional 20 minutes before we were even served drinks.
After placing our food order, we were disappointed to find that the “agua frescas” were not fresh—the Jamaica tasted old and bland. Additionally, we specifically asked the waiter to ensure that my stepfather’s steak was prepared without any spice due to an allergy. However, it became clear that this request was not communicated to the kitchen. When the steak was returned for being incorrectly prepared, all that was done was removing the nopales and sauce on top, while the steak itself was merely flipped. To our further dismay, there was what appeared to be spit on the bottom of the plate.
After finishing our meal, we were never offered refills, and our waiter did not return to check on us. When we were finally ready to leave, it took another 20 minutes to receive the check. To add insult to injury, when we requested that the incorrectly prepared steak be removed from the bill, we were told no, and a 20% tip was added to the total due to us being a “big and difficult group,” according to the hostess.
As a group of Cuban and Mexican descent, we understand that we can be loud, especially when celebrating a special occasion, but we were respectful throughout the evening. Despite this, we received poor customer service, unsatisfactory food, and ultimately felt that our $256 was not well spent. What should have been a joyous birthday celebration turned into a frustrating experience, and we will not be returning to Betos in the future.
We hope that you take this feedback seriously, as the issues we encountered reflect poorly on the standards of service and quality that...
Read moreFood was good unfortunately service wasn’t, decided not to pay too much attention to the service even though it’s a big part of the experience when you dine out. I don’t ever leave review on places so that says a lot about my experience the server didn’t ever make small talk, let us know it was happy hour, never asked how we were doing, didn’t even ask what I wanted to order We just knew because she looked at the next person when she was ready she asked once what we wanted to drink and order barely spoke to us. Didn’t even have to look at her to know she wasn’t smiling even with a mask on. Whenever someone is ordering their dinner nobody wants to feel like they barely want their order to be taken. Even after smiling back at her and saying thank you for the things she acted like she barely wanted to do (take orders and talk to us give us information on what we needed like drinks, happy hour, food) she still didn’t change her attitude much less her tone. We sat for 25 minutes before she finally came to ask her to bring us our bill. When we decided to speak to the manager in regards to her tip that had been automatically taken she said she couldn’t and wasn’t going to get her manager more than once and wasn’t even curious to see why we felt the way we did but instead told us what was missing as if dining somewhere should just be you receiving your food. These are just very few examples of how she acted but long story short she must have been upset she had to work that shift because she very well relayed that message. Can’t leave her name because no surprise there she didn’t introduce herself the only description I have is she was wearing a purple shirt and a braid. Since a lot of us have been servers we understand how much tips mean and always make sure we tip good which should show how bad this experience was. The older man that sat us down and brought us our chips definitely was the only highlight of our experience even tipped him for it and this was only based off of a few minutes that we had an interaction even said goodbye as we exited. We only came here because my dad has been wanting to try this place for a while now and decided to finally come here for his birthday needless to say we will never...
Read moreAs a business owner , I hesitate to write a negative review but this evening was the last straw and seeing all the other 1 star reviews with similar issues , I feel compelled to do so. Also, I’d opt to speak to a manager/owner instead but there is no contact/website and after given how I was treated today , I doubt they’d even put a manager on the phone . I’ve been coming here for years, spending money & tipping well. My last dine was ok, waitress never once checked on our drinks. But that’s ok. I’m Latina and speak Spanish fluently (no room for misunderstanding) and I eat Mexican food a lot so I placed an order for pick up today and asked for extra salsa. At pickup , the lady said the extra salsas were in the bag. Yes I’m mexicana and I like salsa! So I walked to my car and opened the bag , no extra salsa. So I walk back in and kindly ask if I can please have 2 more green salsas. I said ( all in Spanish ) I’m sorry I like at least one for each taco . She was annoyed and rude and said OK well give me back the two red salsa that I gave you. I said ok , but there are 5 tacos total , you gave me 4. So with much attitude she retrieved the 2 and returned after obviously talking crap to the waitress . I’m pretty sure this is a health code VIOLATION . I had my dog in the car. And furthermore, what’s the big deal? I specifically asked for extra salsa when I called , a couple of tiny salsas for a plate of five tacos is not what I consider extra. I don’t know if they had charged me for more or not. If there was an issue, she could’ve simply said OK but I’m gonna have to charge you more which I would’ve been fine with. The lady at the front was incredibly rude. And after all that attitude for one simple request I said to her “I don’t need to keep coming back here if this is an issue . “ Her dismissive response “ya te di tus salas” What’s the deal here? I can’t even imagine how they treat non Spanish speakers. Siempre me ha gustado este lugar, pero no sé porque últimamente se han portado bien groseros conmigo, especialmente la mujer en la caja. This is south Austin and Mexican restaurants are...
