For starters, this is the only coffee shop I've found in Austin that isn't staffed with pretentious jerks, and as a native Austinite, I've seen my fair share over these past few years. The crew here is always friendly and inviting, which comes as a refreshing break from the snobby vibes you get at many other places in town. If you've already read this far, then you know exactly what I'm talking about.
The martial arts theme is pretty fun, and there's always something going on here by way of concerts or comedy shows. The music they play in the meantime is always great, and there's a large assortment of breakfast/lunch food and booze to be had (though the kitchen tends to shut down later in the day, so heads up).
The seating is hit or miss, meaning that it set up well for single individuals or groups of two, but the 3-6 person party may have issues staying grouped together if there's not enough free tables to put together. There are two private seating areas for larger parties of 5+, though I am unsure as to the conditions you have to fulfill in order to utilize those spaces. It's typically not crowded in the conventional sense unless there's an event going on.
Personally, I would like to see more versatile seating options for long-term laptop work and meetings for mid-size groups, as the barstools that I'm usually stuck with don't afford you the ability to lean back and relax so easily.
All in all, this is a great well-rounded place. It's central, which puts you in great proximity to everything else in town. It's affordable, which keeps you from running dry, and it's friendly, so you'll certainly be coming back...
Read moreMy first time ordering at Kick Butt Coffee and I got a hot Mocha. The espresso in the drink was so good and strong and the mocha wasn't dry at all like how some mochas can be. The drink was very smooth and comforting, the barista did a great job and was very kind. I was there working on some things and eventually got hungry so I ordered a Red Dragon sandwich and a house salad to go with it. The sandwich was super good, nicely toasted and was a good lunch size, had a lot of turkey on it, and I'm a fan of whatever the "dragon sauce" is. The veggies on the sandwich and salad were crisp and fresh, the barista who took my food order was nice and helpful as it was my first time ordering, and the person who brought out my food to my table was so kind as well. I was full after so definitely a great option! Great tunes playing, really good lighting, and a variety of seating options. I've never been to an event offered here but I will definitely keep them on my radar of cool things in Austin to look out for because there is a lot happening here pretty often from all the event posters around. I was recommended to check this place out by a friend and I not only love the vibe, but I greatly enjoy the opportunity to be able to support and be a part of a very well established local business. You can tell there is a ton of effort that goes into it and I'm happy to have found such an awesome staple of the city that offers so many reasons to...
Read moreOh, breakfast tacos, I have seen your light and it shines on me forever.
I was in Austin for a few days for a poetry festival and discovered Kick Butt Coffee as they were nice enough to host several of the events. I understand you can’t walk 10 feet in Austin without tripping over a place that serves breakfast tacos, and I’m okay with that reality. Besides at the airport on the way home, Kick Butt Coffee were the only ones I had in the city so I don’t really have anything to compare them to, but these were delicious.
They offered 3 vegetarian options, A black bean and potato, an egg cheddar, and potato, and a yummy special which added avocado and spinach to the previous.
According to their website, they make only so many and may run out depending how busy they are. I got lucky when I showed up…it wasn’t very busy and there were vegetarian tacos a-plenty available for me.
I had the “yummy” special, and the egg, cheddar and potato. These are soft tacos which weren’t so much in terms of presentation, but which were absolutely delicious, especially with a little bit of the spicy salsa. I want more!
Kick Butt is also a full fledged coffee house with a lunch menu with lots of choices for vegetarians. (Order at the counter.)
And perhaps most importantly, the coffee was excellent. All good things to a coffee-house that serves good coffee.
If I lived in Austin I’d be a regular here at all...
