Clearly, Paperboy has its fans. But I don't think I'm one of them.
The brunette hostess that unlocked the door first thing in the morning was friendly. The rest of the service was perfunctory.
When I asked my waiter to give me his recommendation amongst three dishes, he responded, "Well, one's sweet and the other two are savory."
When I pressed him further by asking what he liked, he told me what was the most popular. This is a pet peeve with me. If you work in food service, have an opinion on the food.
Anyway, I ended up getting the "popular" dish (the fried chicken biscuit) with a Lil Remy iced capp and a side of cheese grits. IDK, maybe it's because I've spent more than half my life in KY/VA/GA/SC, but I felt like my meal was a miss.
The breading on the fried chicken was as dark brown as it could be and not be black, a sign of being too long in the fryer. The biscuit was also overcooked -- almost as dark as the chicken -- yet it was somehow raw in the middle. And the cheese grits were just regular plain grits with a bit of cheese grated on top. None of this would pass muster in Atlanta or Charleston.
Maybe other things on the menu are better, but I didn't get led there. As it stands, it wasn't worth the $44 I paid for one person (espresso drink, entree, side, tax, and tip).
TBH I felt the blonde hostess I passed as I walked out was a pretty good representation of the care and attention here. She was standing at the host stand silently drinking coffee while staring off into the void. There wasn't an acknowledgement as I walked by and I was the one that ended up wishing her a nice day.
This place kind feels like no one's really paying attention to the details. Possibly because they...
Read moreI lOVE Paperboy and have dined at the East location several times. I was so happy when I found out that they opened a location around the corner from my house! Sadly for us, but awesome for the restaurant, it is still hard as heck to get a reservation. Failing to find a reservation online for a Sunday at 12:30, I decided to stop by and check the waitlist. We were quoted...wait for it...a 2 hour wait!!! We decided to give it at least an hour if we weren't close, we had decided that we were going to give up and leave. Lucky for us, we got our text after an hour! I figured most people would give up and remove their name from the waitlist. The only downside to their waitlist is that you can only see on Opentable that you are on it, but not where you are on the list. They have a large outdoor patio with several fans so it was nice. The cold brew martini was amazing and desperately needed after my hangover! The only negative about dining later in the day is that they were out of quite a few things, so that was a bummer. We were not deterred and instead, opted for the avocado tostado but subbed for toast and added salmon, fried egg over easy, pickled onions, and sliced jalapeños. It was amazing!! We also shared the mushroom grits which were interesting and really good and as always, the cheddar hashbrown was a winner. The hostess, Kayley was so sweet & patient. When you work at a high volume restaurant, it can get quite stressful and even though there was a constant line, she handled it well and kept cool! It can be a thankless job, so THANK YOU for maintaining your...
Read moreVisited from Florida for a friend's birthday in Austin. Fantastic place for brunch with friends. We were seated on the top terrace that featured a well-lit, shaded dining area. Service was great and to the point. Everyone in my party enjoyed their meal. There was a small hiccup in the taste of one of the items, but it's likely not an everyday occurrence. I do recommend visiting if you are looking for a trendy brunch spot to go to. The rest of this review is more in-depth of what fault occurred.
MORE INFO ON WHY 4-STARS OVERALL BELOW: I do have to have only 3 stars in food, however, as I did have a complaint in a part of the dish I ordered. I had the 'Chicken & Biscuit' and enjoyed every component except the cream gravy for the biscuit. It very much tasted like water and corn starch mixed together with the occasional bit of paprika sprinkled in, very bland and off-putting for the meal. My friends confirmed this and one who had ordered this item before added that it was definitely better the previous time. I notated this to the server and this was hopefully relayed to the kitchen. We chalked it to just being off that day as the cream gravy is made in-house. But, in this review, I can't give higher than a 3-stars in the food rating, bringing it to 4-stars overall. I hope to be able to rectify this when I visit Austin again...
