Taqueria Montenegro — Restaurant in Austin

The girl at the cash register was rude and charged me more for my food than the price listed on the menu. I bought one Egg and Potato and one Bean and Potato breakfast taco. Each taco was listed as $1.25 on the menu so the total should've been $2.50. She charged me $3.

I called her out on it and she first gave me the excuse that I asked for extra salsa. I didn't. I asked for one salsa for each taco I ordered. I wouldn't say that's asking for "extra". After I told her that, she said the Bean and Potato was $1.50, but you can look at the menu and it obviously says $1.25. I told her that as well and she just reiterated in a rude tone that it was $1.50 even though I pointed out that their menu says differently. She didn't care. Even if it was $1.50, the total should've been $2.75 and not $3.

I was planning to tip beforehand anyways so I didn't lose any extra money overall but I won't be going here again due to the rude customer service and them not honoring their prices on the menu. The food was fine but nothing special compared other taquerias...

I use to go here all the time when I worked in the area years back. Today was my first day back since like 2017 and of course there are new people there. Well the quesadillas taste nothing like they used to but the sad part is that the cashier tried to use the language barrier as an excuse to steal my change. My total was $6 and I paid with a $20. She tried to act like she didn’t remember that she never gave me my change. She really messed up because it’s too many taco places on North Lamar that are bomb and will never try to keep my change. I’ve been to taco trucks, family restaurants, and fancy “chef-focused” kitchens and this place has bar none the best barbacoa in town. No one else can touch their barbacoa quesadillas in particular, which are the perfect amount of tenderness and juiciness.

Cash only, so you know it’s good. This is the kind of local gem you keep to yourself, let the foodie bloggers and instagram influencers keep their bougie downtown...
