Hirosaki has been one of my family's favorite sushi/hibachi restaurants in Indiana. However, the last couple times we have been, the service has been very slow, and our latest visit, down-right awful. Inside the door: We had to wait at least 5 minutes for a host to even show up for us to give our name to. We said we would like to sit at the bar and have a drink while we wait for our table. At the bar: As we walked in, there were high top tables and regular 2-person tables covered with linens waiting to be folded. The far wall was piled high with boxes of appliances (it looked like a store-room). the far side of the bar was littered with papers and looked like the manager's office. The whole scene completely distracted from their potentially lovely atmosphere. We waited at least 10 minutes before I finally caught one of the servers and said we'd like a drink menu and some water. The person sitting next to us gave us his menu. We ordered hot sake and they poured it right there for us. But apparently they didn't have any water behind the bar!!!!???? What???!!!!! While we were at the bar, a group of friends of one of the servers arrived and all of them took a shot of sake (server included). I later noticed that this same group got seated, ate and left before we even received our food. In the restaurant: After much debating behind the bar about who could take us, we were finally seated. It appeared, based on all the empty tables, that there were only 2 servers for the entire restaurant. Once we finally received our water, we had been waiting on it for 45 minutes. The food: The sushi took longer than usual to arrive, but since we were without our kids, we didn't mind. The sushi, as always, was delicious. We have never had bad food at Hirosaki. The service: Once seated at our table, the service was ok. We will probably try Hirosaki again, but if we have another experience like this, never again. I can't believe how down-hill the service has gone at this...
Read moreTook my family there for their first experience at a hibachi grill. I have been to others in different cities, but this was my first time going here as well. My initial impressions were good... Until the food was brought out to the hibachi station where we were seated. I glanced down and noticed that all of the uncooked meat - steak, chicken, and shrimp was piled together on top of what looked like an old green cafeteria serving tray. By old, by mean missing chunks from it, color faded where they regularly place the meat. I decided not to make a fuss about it and assumed that they had cleaned everything properly. In hindsight, I should have taken my family and left. We asked for the steak to be cooked medium, and it was delicious. All the food tasted fine. The chicken looked like it was cooked properly. The shashimi we ordered separately also tasted fine.
My son felt slightly ill not long after we left. Complaining mildly about a tummy ache. He went to bed that night and went to school the next morning. Also complaining about a a mildly upset stomach. He didn't make it past 9am. My child was crying/screaming in pain at the nurses station. We brought him home and he spent the next full day being horribly sick. The rest of us fell ill not long after. A magical family experience of being up all night with projectile vomiting and diarrhea... All night long, into the next day as well.
What I can only assume is that there was cross-contamination of mis-handled raw meat and seafood that caused our illness. Again, I have been to several grills and noted that the uncooked product was kept in stainless steel bowls, and separated. This is the first time in which I have fallen ill from eating a sushi/Japanese steakhouse. I will continue to go to others, just not this...
Read moreI tried to put on a smiling face so that my daughter could enjoy the experience because she wanted to eat there. She is not as picky as I am. First I asked for a Pinot Grigio but it tasted like it had been sitting in the fridge for a very long time so I asked the server for something else because it was old and she didn't understand what I was saying. So I went and got another server and explained it to her and told her to just bring me a fresh glass of wine I didn't hear what it was. She brought me another glass of the same wine. The Hibachi cook came out with a dirty cart and he only clean the small section of the the grill or hot surface. I knew then that I didn't want to eat there so I told him to cancel my order and I would just sip on the old wine and the soup. He still made my rice and when he tried to put it on my plate and I told him again that I was canceling my order and I didn't want any he asked he asked me what did I expect him to do with the rice. I told him I didn't care what he did with it cuz it's not my rice. Then he tried to put the shrimp on my plate and I explained I told him again I canceled my order I'm not eating this. So I got up went to find the manager I don't know if she was the owner or not and I explained it to her she looks over and she says after looking at the grill he already put portion the food out and put the food on the grill you can't cancel your order. I said this place is dirty my wine is old I'm not paying for something I didn't eat. My daughter got her food it was so disgusting she took two bites and said forget it we got the bill they charged me for the old wine I didn't even drink and we got the heck out of there and will...
