La Calaera serves up insanely amazing, authentic Mexican and Central American cuisine, with two vibrant locations in Baldwin and McMurray! From the moment you walk in, you're greeted by a warm, welcoming atmosphere, friendly staff, and—best of all—homemade chips and salsa right at your table. The Baldwin location features a gorgeous central bar and plenty of cozy seating, conveniently located on Route 51. Whether you're there for happy hour, lunch specials, or a full-blown dinner, this spot is a must-visit! The menu is expansive, with something for everyone—from classic dishes to bold, flavorful favorites. We tried the Mexican street corn (grilled on a stick with butter and seasoning—so good!), and the queso fundido with house-made Mexican sausage, which packed the perfect amount of spice. The homemade guacamole was a huge highlight! Their margaritas are next-level—highly recommend the frozen strawberry and lime on the rocks! For entrées, the fajita burrito with steak was stuffed with juicy meat, lettuce, pico de gallo, and melty cheese, all wrapped in a soft flour tortilla and served with rice and more lettuce. The quesabirria was a showstopper—tender birria-style beef folded into cheesy tortillas, served with a rich, savory broth for dipping. And just when we thought we were too full—dessert happened. The fried ice cream had a crispy golden shell and creamy vanilla center, topped with whipped cream, chocolate drizzle, and a cherry. The flan was smooth, sweet, and absolutely decadent, finished with a perfect layer of caramel. From top to bottom, La Calaera was a 10/10 experience. Authentic flavors, welcoming vibes, and seriously unforgettable food. Don’t walk—run!

I had a good first-time dining experience at La Calera. The food came out fairly quickly, and the complimentary chips and salsa were a nice touch. They provide two different salsas — one smooth and puréed, the other chunkier with delicious pieces of onion and spices. The chunkier one was definitely my favorite. Our server was friendly and attentive. When I asked for a recommendation, he suggested the “Plato La Calera,” which includes a variety of items, all made with ground beef. Most of the items on the plate were tasty, though I wasn’t a fan of the stuffed pepper — but that may just come down to personal preference. The queso, unfortunately, was a miss for me; it had the consistency of warm milk and lacked flavor. We also ordered the hot & spicy burrito, which was flavorful and satisfying. Prices were fair for the portion sizes. My only real critique is the atmosphere — the building itself felt unfinished and lacked the warm, authentic vibe I was hoping for. I’d love to see them invest a bit more into the ambiance to match the quality of the food and service

i think this was the best food i’ve had in the entire city of pittsburgh, here’s my thoughts: General atmosphere/inside: 8/10 the inside is very open and welcoming, it’s comfortable, music isn’t too loud but a nice medium volume. temperature is comfortable, a bit on the warmer side but overall, very cozy the booths are nice and roomy (plenty of wiggle room if you’re on the plus size side of things) it is also very well lit. my only concern was to make the menu font ever so slightly bigger as it is a bit hard to read

Service: 9/10 the service was PHENOMENAL we were seated very quickly, and our waitress was super nice. food came out within 15 minutes of ordering. drinks were refilled when we needed it but the cups they do give are huge, so you get more to drink (they also don’t go crazy on the ice so even better) brought out boxes once we had slowed down/close to finished.

Food: 8.5/10 the food was ABSOLUTELY amazing, very very filling, you absolutely get what you pay for. breaking it down by food: Chips and salsa, very good, you get a free basket when you sit down, id say the chips could use a little bit more salt but even then they were great without it. the salsa is definitely a step above mild, it has a nice kick to it, probably one of my favorite salsas so far Steak tacos, i got the steak tacos with the flour tortilla, and they were incredible. they were very filling, fresh/hot, and delicious. you put the toppings on yourself which i love because i can control how much of each goes on it. for my toppings i put rice, guacamole, cheese, and sour cream. the cheese is fresh, creamy, and very very good. the guac was also very creamy, with the perfect amount of flavor. the rice was seasoned and also very good, only thing is that i wish it was cooked a very little bit longer to be a bit softer(to eat as a side), but on a taco it was perfect and really pulled together everything Drinks (soda), drinks were good, not too much ice and the cups were nice and big so we only needed one refill...

Was skeptical to go since Old Mexico closed but the location hasn't missed a beat. To my surprise my favorite server from Old Mexico, Jose was still there. Trust me you should ask for Jose anytime you go. Knows the menu like the back of his hand. Speaking of the menu it's more consolidated now instead of the 300 items from the last menu. I had the two burrito deluxe I believe and I substituted steak for the beef at an extra charge but well worth it. Absolutely stunning. Steak was thin and tender and the rice was cooked perfectly. Could only eat one burrito probably because I ordered a large serving of guacamole with our chips while we were waiting for our entrées. Guacamole was so fresh and silky. Truly a Work of art. Speaking of a work of art, my date ordered the super burrito and it was a masterpiece. I was actually jealous of her plate. Loaded with shrimp, chicken and steak. She gave me a sample of her dish and every protein was tender and succulent. Shrimp was cooked perfectly. We also had two large frozen margaritas. She had mango and I had strawberry and lemon. Very tasty but that was the only part of our meal that was lacking. Those monster drinks should have had us wasted but we barely had a buzz. Would have to order extra alcohol next time I guess. Overall one of the best meals I've had in the last couple years. Don't walk, run and give this place a try. Probably the best Mexican food in the city. ...
