TLDR: NYC quality Jewish Deli with Baltimore heritage. Gets very busy, but lines move quickly. Come for anything with pastrami on it.
Vibe: 4/5. Attman's is a Baltimore landmark, serving up sandwiches from the same location for over 100 years which can be seen in this time capsule deli. The neighborhood surrounding the store has dramatically changed over the years, leaving it in a less than desirable part of town, but it's well worth the pilgrimage. Silver lining to the area is that parking is mostly free and easily obtained. The old-school interior of the deli includes a counter that spans almost the entire length of the restaurant with the menu clearly laid out on the wall behind it. In the adjacent space to the left of the counter is a large dining room, complete with autographed pictures of celebrities who have patronized Attman's over the years. The ordering system is pretty simple, you stand in line at the counter until a staff member takes your order, you pay at the register near the door and then you can either dine in or take it to go. Be warned, during peak lunch hours this place gets super crowded, with sometimes a line wrapping around the block. However, the staff is efficient at what they do and can get through a long line in no time.
Service: 5/5: During our visit for Sunday lunch, the entire staff at Attman's was not only welcoming, but proficient at getting us our delicious meal in a timely manner. Upon entering the deli at 1:30pm, the line had queued all the way to the back of the restaurant. To our surprise, the staff was able to move through the line in less than 10 minutes. Then once our order was taken, it only took another 10 minutes until we were chowing down. This is the kind of turn around time you come to expect from a tenured deli at lunch rush.
Food: 5/5. There's a reason Attman's has been slinging sandwiches since 1915, the unrivaled portions and taste. During our visit, we decided to get the Attman's Specialty Reuben, Nosh On Rye, 2 coddies and an order of onion rings for dine in. Touted as a Baltimore favorite, the specialty Reuben was piled high with warm pastrami, sauerkraut, Russian dressing and swiss between 2 homemade potato Latke pancakes. Though delicious, it was a bit unwieldy to handle while eating. The latkes didn't add much to the already flavorful combination of pastrami, sauerkraut and dressing so it just became more of a logistical burden. The Nosh on Rye took home best in show at lunch, bringing everything I wanted from a sandwich to the table. We opted to substitute the corned beef for pastrami on our Nosh which is a highly recommended move. The sandwich is served club style with 3 pieces of rye bread, 1 piece separating the pastrami and brisket. The succulent pastrami paired perfectly with the beefiness of the brisket. Along with the piles of meat, the sandwich also comes garnished with homemade coleslaw and Swiss which added both a pleasant textural crunch and creaminess to each bite. The onion rings were also a great addition to the meal, offering a nice crunchy change in texture between sandwich bites. Unfortunately, the biggest upset of our lunch came from the coddies. Traditional Baltimore coddies are typically fried pattys of salted cod, mashed potatoes and parsley. At Attman's, it appears they are using more of a stuffing based filling (think Stovetop stuffing) with barely any cod flavor. These are unlike any coddie I have had in my lifetime and personally, they...
Read moreWent there with a friend whom had never been, this was my 1st since Covid. I treated him. We got turkey rueben, a bottled beverage, I got a pickle, soda, cornbeef, pastrami w/ swiss cheese & onions it came 41.76. That is Ridiculous. I didn't notice that they charged extra for the cheese and .15 cents for onions( I should have been advised) The meat had no taste, it clearly was a very generic brand. The cheap I could barely taste. My friend (neighbor) threw the other half of his sandwich away. He said that it wasn't good. I almost feel over as high as his Reubens was. I advised him in advance that they have no grill so they do not grill their Reubens.
Years ago when I worked downtown I went their and picked up a hotdogs it was between 2pm - 3pm. I planned to eat it for dinner as I was working late. I opened the hotdog around 5pm and it was green. I called and told them and I was told that I could bring it back or just let them know the next time that I come in and I could get something else. I never went back. That must have been around 2015. When I did return sometime in Late 2018 I didn't mention it because it had been so long, today 11/17/2022 was my 1st returning since then and pretty sure after today I won't return. I think the prices are outrageously high. I don't mind paying for good tasting food but when it's not good I feel robbed. I sure miss Lenny's they were the best. They grilled your sandwich if that's what you wanted and your hotdogs. They had the best Reubens in town in my opinion. Lenny's Owings Mills doesn't compare to the one that was on Lombard nor do any of the other Lenny's locations, not even sure if the others are open anymore. I do know that the one in Owings Mills is open, they were very good many years ago. Sad how things have changed, not...
Read moreLet me start by saying I've been coming to this place for most of my life, I remember as early as 7 with my grandparents to get a Cornedbeef sandwich and hotdogs.
This place is popular! There is a free parking lot to the left of the building, and it gets full quickly, yet I always secure a park close by. I'd park anywhere and walk there if I had to.
When you first walk in, it's skinny and appears really small. Excuse yourself, pass the folks who are paying for their items, and shimmy to the back to place your order.
Things move quickly, so hopefully, you have already peeked at the menu and know what you want. Like any other deli, you yell out your order and place your trust in the person making it happen. THEY NEVER MISS!
I always request a cornedbeef sandwich on rye bread, extra onions, sourcrout, and a tad bit of spicy mustard. I secure the order with a bag of chips and a snapple. I don't remember exactly how much I paid, but it was more than $10 and less than $20.
While I wait, the employees always greet me, sharing a cute story or shooting me the sweetest smile while they pack up orders.
You make your way back to the front and pay for your items just before leaving out the door you entered.
There is seating inside of this Deli. A decent amount of seating, actually. It's off to the left.
I'm sure I'll always make the 30-minute drive to Attman's to get that sandwich made with love. I refuse to cheat on them. It's the only place I'll get my cornedbeef from!
I highly...
