Golden Valley is now a family 'go to' for casual special occasions. My first visit was a family Thanksgiving dinner 2 years ago. I was very impressed with the quality of service and the delicious food. Flash forward last week , my mother and I took my sister there for her birthday. You have several choices for seating. The front patio wich is very pretty and covered as well. Or you may have a cozy but spacious booth on either side of the restaurant. For those of you who prefer it, you can sit at the bar.(ask the bartender if he has any special drinks he has created himself. It doesn't state this anywhere on their menus, so ask , you may get lucky!) My mother's and I both got the poki salad . A mixture of fresh greens, avocado, cherry tomatoes, and .. Ahi(raw tuna) served with a vinaigrette. Very tangy but light as well. I suggest ordering a cup of clam chowder before hand,,,, it is wonderful, and I grew up eating chowder at Mo's in seaside! My sister had a top sirloin steak with carmalized onions, small oven roasted potatoes, and a slaw. She was in heaven. I am saving one of the best for now, And, out of order: For an appetizer we ordered the onion rings. I am not a person who gets excited about onion rings; but these..... These made me want to get a job there so I could eat them always! The batter was light and free of any lingering 'whatever -was -in -the- fryer- last, taste' (kudos)! The actual REAL onion was just right . Not over or under cooked. I had to restrain myself from hogging them all!!! Now, the desert was a perfect way to finish. I had the mixed berry cobbler (raspberry, blueberry, and blackberryask about the berry mix ,it may change) Homemade whipped cream (a lost art) and just because I could, an 'add- on scoop of ice cream. The crumble is pretty rich, but in a good way. My sister got chocolate mousse. I must say that this place is the perfect place for a first date, anniversary, holiday dinner, lunch with the boss, and birthdays. It is casual enough to make you comfortable without sacrificing great food and...
Read moreI want to start with this: as a brewery, it was excellent. Every beer I tried here was excellent, although I did not know which beers I tried were their own, as I found a couple east coast crafts on their menu (which I also enjoyed).
Now to the glaring problem with this evening's visit: the steaks. The menu strongly implied that the steak I ordered was, in fact raised by the owners of the restaurant (negated by the server, who said the steak was from a different farm, due to the recent covid-related crisis). I ordered the New York strip. The side dishes (fingerling potatoes and asparagus) were wonderful, but immediately I had a problem. My medium rare steak was cooked almost well done. Barely any pink at all. I've never re-ordered a steak before, but given this was a $37 steak, I sent it back. It came back just fine. From there, I dug in. Immediately I found the steak to be rather dry and almost impossible to chew through. Here comes the constructive criticism: (and I hope the owners read this) cows raised on grass require a lot of butter when it comes to their beef. The marbling just does not support dry cooking. Aside from that, if it comes to light that I truly did eat beef produced by the Golden Valley company, I'm pretty confident that spent grain from the brewing process is not sufficient for high quality, well raised beef. That spent grain is better off being composted and used for future agricultural production, as beef needs the richness that fresh grain provides. The biggest problem, however (and arguably the most egregious) is my own opinion: the steak I had today was not from a happy cow. Each bite I had from it was a little heartbreaking. The beef I ate today was clearly not from an ethical slaughterhouse and was obviously stressed out during its death. Very sad to see this low quality from such an upstanding business. (Please message me when these problems have been addressed, and I will happily take this down as it pains me to...
Read moreMy husband and I went on 02/26/22 at 7pm for my husband's birthday. We had never been before but my parents, who have told us how good it is, had given him a gift card so we figured it was a great time to go. We couldn't have been more right. Our Bartender/Server, Kyle, was so wonderful. He took great care of us and even surprised my husband with a slice of decadent chocolate torte with raspberry sauce, for dessert. We chose the Spent Grain Pretzel for a starter; split a 12 oz, perfectly rare, prime rib with onion rings and bleu cheese crumbles; fingerling potatoes in duck confit and roasted broccolini. To drink I had the Atlas Elevator Dobbelbock, and my husband had the Bourbon Bomb as well as a glass of Westward Whiskey. The Chef/Kitchen Staff outdid themselves! The pretzel was crisp outside and pillowy inside, with a delicious cheese sauce and a tasty grain mustard. The prime rib was cooked to a delightful, rare char with tangy bits of bleu cheese and the onion rings were crisp and thick. It is here that I would like to take a moment to point out the veg. Having worked in many restaurants before, I have to tell you that properly cooked vegetables are oftentimes, hard to find. Too often the veg is cold, or too soft and/or boiled within an inch of its life; however these potatoes and broccolini were perfectly firm but tender and still very warm. The beer and whiskey were,of course, fantastic. The staff were all very friendly, wore masks as required and were attentive but not intrusive. The ambience is that of a nice lodge with a few TV's with games playing. I was very refreshed to not find blaring music as you do in so many places. I can't think of a better dinner for my husband's birthday, he enjoyed it immensely. As I said, Kyle the Bartender/Server attended to us but there was a whole bevy of staff who tended to us so Thank...
