I read a lot of good reviews, so was excited to try this place. After I tried this place, I went back and read the negative reviews. I really really wish people would stop giving this place kind reviews. They should be out of business.
Sadly, the expectation for Asian restaurants is to expect surly service. It's a cliche at this point. But Taste of Sichuan keeps the tradition alive. They clearly couldn't care less about customers' dining experiences.
The food we ordered (sweet and sour chicken for me, some house spicy sichuan specialty chicken for my boyfriend--I forget the name, but everyone raves about it) was fine, I'll start out with that. My food tasted OK, I ordered a basic common dish, and that's what I got. Lots of filler veggies, but the chicken was crisp, and the sauce was normal. My boyfriend's was OK, as well. I doubt he'd order it again.
Lots of people mention that the dishes are more expensive, but that you get a large portion size. The portion is pretty average for any Chinese-American joint I've been to, honestly. Maybe people are trying to make themselves feel better about the cost. The food here was maybe half again as expensive as my local place. If the food and service was good, though, I wouldn't care about the price.
You will be nickel-and-dime'd for everything. You have to pay for tea, you have to pay for white steamed rice (you get one bowl to share with the table), you have to 'upgrade' to brown steamed rice, you can't upgrade to fried rice--only pay full entree price. There are no dinner combos, you really can only try ONE thing, and maybe an app. Hopefully your friends will let you try some of their food.
Make sure to ask for a fork if you, like me, are not as proficient at using two sticks to eat tiny grains of rice as you'd wish. Because they only provide chopsticks.
Other diners seated after us got their food before we did, always fun to see. A food runner rushed by our table and dropped my boyfriend's entree off. The better part of 10 minutes later, we were able to flag our waiter down (who acted like he'd never seen us before of course) to ask where MY food was. He went back to see, and came back with the ticket he'd submitted as proof that he HAD submitted both of our orders together, which he left on the table for me as proof that he should still get a tip. I didn't ask for evidence, I just wanted my food. Maybe 3-5 min later my food arrived.
The only place they exceeded my expectation was by refilling our water glasses (not our waiter, some other random lady), since i had told my boyfriend that I was pretty sure they wouldn't.
They only accept Visa/MC, FYI. They will bring you a receipt with handy check boxes for leaving tips, starting at 18% and higher. lol. I wish, in hindsight, I was confident enough to leave no tip. They did nothing at all to earn any tip. I also wish I had kept my receipt to make sure they didn't change the amount submitted, since now I've read a lot of negative reviews about them adding tips to take out orders, and other seriously shady, borderline illegal (?) practices. PLEASE watch your receipts and the amount they charge you!
The only reason I could fathom for someone to try this place, especially more than once, is if you are eager to try their more exotic sichuan dishes that you can't find at your average little Chinese-American place. Even then, I wish you good luck. You...
Read moreI was very happy with the food here. Admittedly the food is tasty but pretty bad with there attitude and treating people staring from the woman at the cashier and the waitresses and manager. Each plate is $20 and up the people in this restaurant are very intimidating and rude or maybe even racist because i am a Hispanic person. The times i come here they treat me rudely like i came to ask for free food or what? i came to consume i paid for each of my dishes. It will be the last time I come back to this restaurant and what a pity the food is good but the people are rude from the cashier girl to the person serving the food to the manager who couldn't solve my problem and try to ignore my complaint. The girl in front of the desk tried to force me to tip when I was leaving the restaurant. today I came with my mom to eat here because I enjoy this food, it's really good, but like I said, the staff was very rude at the end of the meal, my mom passed her card to pay for our dishes we had spend $38 in total and we had already paid and signed our receipt, when I was leaving, I gave the cashier there receipts copy which I had already signed, then she called me and said excuse me you forgot to sign the recieve I told her what I already did and she showed me where I was supposed to sign and it was were I had to put a tip amount. I told her that I was not going to tip today She replied: don't you like our food? and I said yes but I don't want to leave a tip today I she sarcastically said it's nice to leave a tip for appreciation trying to force me to sign my receipt to leave a tip. She maid other rude comments and was been sarcastic because I was refusing to sign for a tip I ask her if it was mandatory to tip and she told me no but in appreciation I should she seem angry I told her that if I was been treated this way I was not going to come anymore to there restaurant which she reply good. The fact that she was forcing me to tip and giving me rude looks and making rude comments I was not willing to tip at all. Customer service at this place is so bad I went and spoke to the manager who just said he was sorry it shouldn't be like that but I still feel like he did nothing to resolve the issue for me and try to ignore my complaint. Just saying food is good but the people are very rude and intimidated and perhaps racist. If you plan to dine at this place be ready to be force to tip and mostly if they see you like there food or if they just don’t like you at all. 🫢 I would be willing to tip but not like this this was not acceptable from them, so food is good people are rude I wouldn’t recommend this...
Read moreHUGE menu with lots of variety -- some is amazing, unique incredible flavors cooked perfectly. Some items are wayyyyy to sweet or dry. But once you find your favorites it's easily one of the best Chinese places this side of the Willamette - or at least the food is.
Unfortunately most of the time the service is so aweful it can ruin the experience on days it's particularly bad.
The service here is NEVER good but sometimes it's not as bad as others.
Waiters/waitresses often in a fowl mood. Don't expect a smile or friendly welcome in conversation. On bad days you might get an argument when they bring you the wrong item.
After you place your order you'll never get the same server again. Random bussers will bring you your food - different items all at different times. Might be waiting 30min between your first and last entre showing up. Or get your appetizer 15min after you've finished your last entre.
Nobody will check up on you and the people who drop off your food practically air drop it - they don't stop walking while they place the plate down. The only way to stop them if you need anything is to yell at them to come back - which feels rude or going up behind their service counter and just grabbing what you need yourself - which also feels rude.
If you need utensils or napkins or water or a beer -- you'll have to wave down a random person and they act like you've massively inconvenienced them by doing so.
Very disorganized. Might not get the right orders. Check!!
But when the food is good, it is pretty good!!
The staff work so hard!!! -- I just wish they would organize themselves so the staff is in a better mood and so that obviously the service would be better too.
Improving the service would raise this place from a 2* to a 4.5* experience! A straight 5* if they redid just a few of their recipes.
The fish is fire. So good. Their spicy fish dishes are some of the best Chinese food in town.
But the chicken Kung pow is like sugar coated chicken nuggets and a TON of peanuts. Just sweet dry nuggets and a jars worth of peanuts. No vegetables. No heat. Literally Panda Express is fresher and less sweet.
Get the spicy basel beef instead.
Noodles are hand pulled and have got the perfect chew!!
My suggestion -- search the reviews for pictures of what looks good. Because it certainly all isn't good. But most of the items that LOOK good are good. And vice versa.
But like I said when it IS good it's great!
Treat your staff better because this place is really brought down by it...
