Have you ever been to a restaurant that fumbles every step of the way?
My wife and I were in the region and had a random craving for clams, we found Clam Diggers Seafood and couldn't be more excited to try it out. Since it was almost an hour drive from where we were staying, we thought it was an excellent opportunity to explore more of the area and satisfy our cravings.... Well weren't we in for a surprise.
It's probably easiest if I provide a list of pros and cons (the cons will be in chronological order.
Pros: -The fries were good -The hush puppies were good -During the last 10 minutes of our experience the server was very apologetic -Dessert was free (with purchase of a meal)
Cons: -Upon arriving, a middle aged woman with shorter hair asks from across the restaurant "can we help you?" -Only one server was wearing a mask, we later saw not one member in the kitchen was wearing one (I'll own this, since at that point we should have made the decision to leave). -They were out of clams, shrimp, several types of fish, steak, any ingredients for a salad and all but one dessert (remember that call ahead? This would have been a great time for a clam restaurant to be transparent and say "we're out of clams"... That didn't happen) -Our appetizer (mussels), ordered with no Old Bay is served.... With Old Bay -I order Alaskan crab legs, but I receive crab cakes, with a side missing because "steamed broccoli takes the longest to cook". Within a few minutes I get half my order of crab legs, the rest are brought out 10-15 minutes later.
I like to think this was a one-off experience, but logistically, this restaurant should be able to keep (at the very least) the ingredients for a salad and maybe the menu item in their...
Read moreFirst off, we are from Maryland and we know what seafood should taste like. We both started with an appitizer. Mine was a baked soft pretzel, nothing fancy, just a pretzel with a side cup of mustard. That cost $4.95. Total rip off. My husband got 6 oysters, which cost $1.50 each. They were a nice size, tasty and a fair price. We were told to try the create your own platter so we would be able to try several of their seafood selections, so we did. Since this was our first time here, we wanted to try the crab cake in order to get an idea on what Clam Diggers considerd a crab cake. Well they failed. It was about 3/4 inch thick, lots of bread , no signs of any lump crab meat and it tasted like it had a hint of oyster sauce mixed in. We added, 2 scallops which are offered at $2.65 per scallop. They were OK, about the size of a quarter. Then we added 2 stuffed shrimp which were $2.75 each. The menu says Jumbo shrimp, well these were med. to small at least. The stuffing on top was maybe a level tablespoon of crab cake. No bread was offered with the meal. We also had 1 mixed drink a piece. The waitress told us that dessert was included with the meal. We had a choice of Banana pudding or a Brownie. We both chose a Brownie, which we took home to eat later. The bill was $80 before tip! We don't mind paying a lot of money for a meal that is worth it, but this is a far cry from that. When we got home and looked at the Brownie, it was a 3" square with some chocolate syrup drizzeled over it. Clam Diggers, is not a place that we would recommend to our friends. Maybe...
