Umai Thai and Sushi — Restaurant in Bellevue

This is the previous location of Thai Tamarind, they moved down the street. This location is very convenient for me as I live within walking distance. Also I love a BYOB, much more affordable. I was very impressed by the menu, it was hard to make a decision! I'm not worried as I know that I will be back to try as much as I can. We ordered a sashimi platter, fried chicken thighs and The Mahi Mahi entrée with basil sauce.

The yellow tail and jalapano side was forgotten. I mentioned this when we were done with the meal and they brought it out almost immediately. I was pretty full by that point but the quality of the Yellowtail was so outstanding I was not going to refuse.

Wasabi and ginger passed the test. I think it's very important that these additions are of good quality in a sushi restaurant. In my opinion, much like a soup or a salad dressing, these items will give you an idea of the quality of the foods to come. All of the sashimi was excellent: 15 pieces, 3 each of Tuna, Salmon, Snapper, Yellowtail and Octopus. The quality was something I would expect in a much more expensive and fancy sushi restaurant in the city.

The fried chicken thigh was my partner's favorite, they were deboned! That is not something I've seen before and it was so good. I would have liked a little hot sauce or a mustard though.

The Mahi Mahi I had seen in the market earlier in the day so I was exited to try. While it was indeed delicious, the sause was just too sweet for me. I think it would be cool if for cuisines like Thai that there could be a sweetness level in addition to the spicy level. It would help the diabetics eating out.

Umai has recently opened and stopped as it is local and close. I was impressed with the appearance of the restaurant, clean and not over decorated. I wanted a iced lemon tea but they were out and got an iced thai green tea. it was ok, bit strong n sweet for my tastes. the Thai spring rolls were presented with care and visually appealing. Very crispy and tasty. For entree i ordered the Spicy basil fried tice with crispy chicken with heat level 6 out of 10. Did a takeout order of orange chicken and sushi combo. The orange chicken was $20 and there were 6 small pieces of chicken. This was pretty unacceptable considering the cost. The sushi was deplorable. The shrimp tempura had only shrimp tempura and nothing else in the roll. The Philly roll had what appeared to be flaky canned salmon, not smoked. I will never return. This was insanely overpriced and not tasty, poor portions and the sushi was wrong. Such a disappointing replacement to what had been in this spot before. Would never recommend...
