DON'T COME HERE IF YOU ARE GLUTEN FREE
We were very excited to go to Okawa. When we arrived the first impression was very disorganized. We were shown to a table and it took ten minutes for the waiter to first arrive at our table. He was kind and was clearly doing his best; the restaurant is clearly lacking in communication between employees, and organization.
My husband ordered the New York Steak and Shrimp. There was no other description of the meal available - just the New York Steak and Shrimp. What my husband recieved was not at all a New York steak but instead a stir fry with cut up pieces of cheap beef. My husband was quite upset at the misrepresentation of this meal. He paid $25 for a cheap stir fry. To top it off when my daughter recieved her meal (she ordered the kids steak meal) it was the exact same thing that my husband recieved; the portions were the same.
I unfortunately am gluten free. If you are gf DO NOT GO HERE! They served me salad with no dressing. I was supprised that I was not given any gf dressing options. I asked if there was gf dressing and he said "no." I asked if they at least had oil and vinager. He came back with a dressing that was gf 5 minutes later.
We discussed gf options for sushi roles. He had some suggestions so I took them. The cooks completely removed all sauces and fish eggs from the roles I ordered. When I recieved 2 bland sushi roles that I paid $30 for, I asked if there was any sauce that could be put on it. I then asked why it was not disclosed to me that the roles would need to be changed when we first discussed gf sushi options. At this time my husband complained about the meal he recieved.
The waiter appologized and explained that he could take the meals off of the tickets but they would need to be returned to the kitchen. He tried to smooth things over but said "In all fairness you guys are a difficult table." At this point my husband was so disappointed and frustrated that he didn't want to re-order.
After 2 more trips back from the waiter I was told that I couldn't have the normal sauce on the roles because Sriracha is not gf. This is completely not true and it is clear the neither the cooks nor the waiter understood what gluten is.
This is very concerning for people who have a gluten intolerance or celiacs disease. Instead of working with me they removed things that were completely unnecessary. They are not knowledgeable about anything gf.
We were not compted for any meals and we left wondering how we paid $70 for such horrible food and...
Read moreTerrible dining experience on 04/27/24 9PM The server got my order incorrectly. I ordered Shrimp tempura bento and got shrimp glazed in soy sauce idk what it’s called. I said that’s not what I ordered and she said they only have shrimp tempura and veggie available. I said ok and waited patiently for my order. They have no sauce for the tempura. To be honest, the tempura looks like the boxes you can buy at costco as well as the “siumai”. I got 2 pieces of shrimp tempura. The glass of water accidentally slipped on my hand and it got to my 12-week old’s daughter’s head who’s sleeping on her grandad’s arms. My dad was also soaked. I said sorry to them because I didn’t mean to and it was accident. We did our best to clean up until our server came and helped us. I apologized a lot of times and said that the glass SLIPPED my hand. Then she said she will grab rags. When she came back, she said, “DON’T BLAME THE BABY BECAUSE THE BABY IS JUST SLEEPING.” My husband and I look at each other’s eyes because in no way I am blaming my 12-week old child. The comment was rude and I said, “I am not blaming my baby. I said “SLIPPED” not “SLEEP”. Then we did leave a tip below 10% because we’re not happy with the food and service. Tips are TIPS. It is not obligatory nor mandatory. It should reflect the service and food you have received. Then she whined because it was just that amount. She started shouting at my husband which was very disrespectful and childish. At this point, I left because my postpartum self can’t...
Read moreUpdated review (from 2020): Went out with family. My mother-in-law wanted to take us to have a nice meal. I immediately thought of Okawa as a good place to go, where there was a good amount of menu variety for our party. While the sushi I had was okay, it wasn't amazing by any means, and others at our table weren't as happy with their meals. And while the sushi wasn't amazing, I noticed that prices had gone up to be more in line with the nicer sushi restaurants in town, like Chi and Kanpai. In addition to this, our server seemed intent on getting us out from the moment we sat down. He was at our table every couple of minutes, asking if we were ready to order, never asked us if we'd like anything else -- just brought us the check, and exuded an attitude that he'd rather be doing anything other than talking to us. I know food service is a hard job, and because of that I try to be a patient and understanding customer, but I've had better customer service from McDonald's. Next time I go out with my family, we'll be going somewhere else.
Original review (from 2017): Good food, good service, and reasonable prices. They have a good selection of sushi, as well as plenty of non-sushi fare. Half of the restaurant is set up with hibachi tables, there is a sushi bar, and they have a full bar as well. While it is classy enough for a nice dinner out, it isn't so pretentious that you feel uncomfortable going out...
