I should have left after my unfortunate visit to the bathroom. That was the first red flag of many. Despicable describes the lack of care taken to clean the female bathroom. Literally everything about it- down to the amount of grim on the door. Then as I exited the bathroom I passed by the kitchen and noticed that no one handling/cooking food was wearing gloves. That was red flag number 2. I warned my husband about the bathrooms and told him that going to a gas station would most likely be a cleaner option if he needed a toilet. I ordered a margarita and things got worse. It seems that though they have a menu with frozen drinks on it that they don’t actually serve those drinks. The machine is broken and I venture to guess it’s been that way for a while. Red flag yet again yet I stayed. I decided to try the on the rocks margarita. When I saw it coming to my table I immediately knew I’d made a mistake as it was almost white as opposed to a yellow like a margarita should be. It, hands down, was one of the worst drinks I’ve ever had. I asked the server if she could maybe add something to it to give it some flavor as it tasted like water. After 15 minutes still she never came back to make it right. From where I was seated I had a direct view of the kitchen and had been watching the cooks with no gloves handle everything while in between touching everything in sight. So many red flags at this point yet it still got even more intense. All of a sudden I see one of the cooks take a handful of cheese and plop it onto some poor souls dish - again- no gloves, touching everything, into cheese and then that cheese on food. Guess whose food it was? Yep. Over it came to our table. I told the server that under no circumstances was I eating that due to what I’d just seen. I informed her that I’d watched the cooks handle a variety of food with no gloves and asked why they had none on. She said…….THEY NEVER WEAR GLOVES. Nope. I’m out. Terrifying isn’t it? Shocked, perplexed and disgusted is how we left. Oh and still hungry. How this place has the good reviews it does is mind boggling and questionable in my...
Read moreEdit after new visit: I don't want to recant my previous experience - stay mindful of your tab and communicate with your server before just blindly paying but we did go back shortly after my last review. Our experience was 5 stars across the board, no muddy waters when the bill came, fresh food, and still the best Mexican restaurant in the city.
Original: This is usually a solid 5+ star experience for us- the food is phenomenal here and it’s not super crowded, a great place for a quiet dinner in a super casual setting… im really disappointed to be leaving a less than 5 star review. Our dinner tonight was absolutely delicious, as always, but when our ticket came we were shocked. We ordered the super enchilada platter, a side of rice and beans and small guac for our 4 year old, tres leches cake, and an iced tea for my husband. We were charged for all that, of course, which should have tabbed us out at around $25-30 (or so we expected.) My husband was charged an extra $2 for two iced tea refills (she inky refilled once and his glass was over halfway full when she did so) and I’ve never heard of a charge for refills of tea in the first place. Our four year old’s meal ended up at $10 and we were charged an extra $6 for a setup since we shared the massive dinner platter. I know most places charge to prevent people trying to take advantage, but we had the one basket of chips and a small condiment cup of queso each- no more- and no tortillas. Our expected tab of $25-30 ended up coming in at $46. We always leave at least 25% tip but at a cost like that for what we received, that wasn’t earned this time. Even if these things are standard, it seems like really poor hospitality to charge a family of three this way without a heads up about these added costs. I’m really disappointed- this is our go-to local place to eat Mexican and I feel like I don’t trust them enough now to come back. Genuinely...
Read moreMaybe I ate there on a bad day, but the food was not as great as I read in other reviews. Let me start by saying that I am half Mexican and grew up in a border town so I am well aware of what true Mexican food tastes like. That being said, here goes my experience at Birria Diaz... As I walked in the I told the waitress it was my 1st time there. Although she was sweet enough, she kinda acted like it may have been her 1st day there because she didn't really seem to know what to do with me. She finally offered me a menu, and asked if I wanted her to bring me chips & salsa, and asked what I wanted to drink. Chips & salsa were adequate & salsa was flavorless. I thought they were complimentary as they usually are in most Mexican restaurants. I must have paid for it unless the sprite & side of rice was $7. As I looked through the menu, most of the pictures of the food dishes looked dry & unappealing so I ordered the medium Birria for $10; 1- I ordered beef & I got lamb although they insisted it was beef. I have eaten lamb before and I know the difference in taste between the two. The waitress offered to bring me another order of lamb (although was very clear that I wanted beef). 2- it was super watery & the salsa was flavorless mostly water; all I could taste was the lamb flavor, and it was very "game-y". Not impressed... 3-for $10 it doesn't come with rice- I had to order it separate. It did however come with 2 small sides of raw onions, radishes, cilantro, & key limes. $16.75 later I left disappointed and unimpressed with anything but the fact that the restaurant smelled & looked clean. So much for the people who posted that the food was inexpensive...
Maybe I'll try again another day cuz I don't like leaving...
